More Sprint details: New Treo Pro target launch, Rumor 2, Instinct Mini, HTC Cedar and more

Ok Sprint people, you had some bad news yesterday as we learned the Treo Pro will not be launching on time this coming Sunday. It’s time to regroup and calm down because you know we wouldn’t just hit and run with bad news. Our ninjas came back with some new details that shed a bit of light on various goodies coming your way over the next few months, so let’s get right to it.

  • Palm Treo Pro: The new target launch is March 15. We’re still not sure what exactly is behind the repeated delays but apparently Sprint still isn’t overly confident in the handset because the new launch date is still just a target, not firm. All our ninja had to say on the matter was that it didn’t pass Sprint’s standard testing process and as such, delay city.
  • LG Rumor 2: Sprint is also targeting mid-March for the Rumor 2 which will be available in black and blue.
  • LG LX370: This will be a mid-range feature phone with a slider form factor dropping in April/May.
  • Samsung Instinct Mini: It looks like the rumors are true indeed. We’ve confirmed that Sprint is set to get its paws on a smaller, slimmer Instinct and it’s currently slated to launch on April 19. It will be an addition to the Instinct family rather than a replacement for the current model and it will be available in copper or graphite. Saucy. The bad news – EVDO Rev 0.
  • HTC Cedar: First seen in the HTC roadmap leaked last month, the Cedar is a QWERTY candybar that isn’t exactly cutting edge in terms of design. All the same, Sprint bagged it and it’s set to drop in June.

As for the man of the hour, the Palm Pre, nothing new on that front we’re afraid. We’re still looking at a launch in the May/June time-frame.

So Sprint’s going to launch the Palm Treo Pro on the same day they are rumored to be launching the Palm Pre.

Oh yeah, THAT’S going to happen, alright!

Going to the Pre right away is not even thinkable. Here is why…

    1. It will have some issues… It must have som issues. There is no way it will work 100%.

    2. The Pre will not have all of the features we need. It will take six to twelve months for it to mature enough to use it for business. The applications alone will take months to get written.

    3. Palm and Sprint NEVER meet release dates. The only dates they meet are dates that nobody knows about and they suprise us with a release.

I suppose that Sprint is protecting their customers by not releasing a phone that they know has problems. However, for them to constantly miss dates is beyond frustrating. In all of my review of Sprint WinMo devices none of them really have battery life or features that are that great. Most of the reviews are ho-hum and not impressive. Sprint needs the TreoPro to keep it’s business customers that want a phone that can be extended with third party software and is based on some standard ( however loose ) operating system.

Get it together Sprint. Give us dates that we can count on and that you can meet 100%. Even if it is bad news…. Give it to us and then meet the date you give. We are not setting the dates…. Sprint is…

If the Pre was launching next month it probably would’ve been on the list too. I wish they tested the Instinct like that but I guess that’s why the Treo Pro is delayed and re-delayed

    Pro Feb 22, March 1, 8 or 15
It only depends on ongoing final testing of a Rom fix to allocate +/- 10 to 20 MB free memory. Pro is produced. Pro has passed FCC. It is in in stock stateside in one warehouse. 230,000 units. Production in China of additional stock has not halted. A new Rom has been developed to tighten default memory usage. It is now undergoing testing. Reflash by HTC contractors of 230,000 will take two days, mostly unpacking and repacking boxes. Reflash of stock coming off the line in China is easy.

    Pre June 15-30.
Pre is not produced. Only about 200 alphas have left china. Production has not occurred. Beta has not occurred. Final physical specs have not been settled.

What handsets do you think are made in the USA?

Product like this is made of several components of with variety of country of origin. Example, iPhone: many parts Singapore, some parts Malaysia, smaller amounts of parts Japan, Germany and US (wifi chip), all assembled Hon Hai (Foxconn) Shenzhen.

Largest maker, Nokia (40% of all 1,200,000/a WW handsets) has closed its factories in Germany, and moved almost all production to far east, excepting small new assembly in Romania.

Software and marketing are mostly done in US. Palm software and Windows software is mostly US.

Mo ยป So by June 15 – 30 you mean March right? Haw. A lot of people took BGR’s leak post and immediatly took it to say: “Should be on shelves by March 15th.”. I personally wish that was the case. I’m more hyped about this phone than anything. Unfortunately, I even have to be realistic. I’ll still hold out for the “official” date, but I have a feeling you reaslists are right.

So it will be out by Fed 15th right?

@Mo: Explaining it away doesn’t alter the truth about the US domestic economic reality. Deceiving yourself (or others) into a false-belief that “it’s inevitable” is purely the same for-profit propaganda which helped land the US in this current depression.

    backbeat:
I have no idea what you are blathering about, or saying I am “explaining away” something.

Is this a blog on politics or economic culture?

I explained how consumer electronics are made. Everyone gets a piece of the product. The software is no less of part of the product than the hardware. US software dominates the smart handset market, US also generally dominates in marketing and branding, East Asia dominates manufacture, and India is a significant player support.

Why falsify my statements, placing in quotes “its inevitable”? What is inevitable? Global trade and specialization is not inevitable, it is the core of the human civilization — something that is an organic fact of markets since stone age man traded shell jewelry for flint implements and a twenty bushels of wheat for a rough copper ingot?

    “For profit propaganda”? What?
