Sony Ericsson wants a piece of the leak action; Hikaru rumors revived

Why should everyone else have all the fun? Granted other leaks leading up to MWC so far have been a bit more, shall we say exciting, but revived news of Sony Ericsson’s upcoming flagship Walman phone isn’t a bad thing. So behold – a leaked image of the Hikaru (Hikaru? Sounds like a fuzzy little animal from down under) suggests we might finally be getting an official announcement from Sony Ericsson next week at MWC and long-time SE fans will hopefully be appeased. While it may be a bit behind the times in many areas, the Hikaru will come packing an 8 megapixel camera and Sony’s latest Walkman player – possibly marking the end of days where potential buyers had to choose between a good camera (Cyber-shot line) or a good media player (Walkman line). To refresh your memory, here are the known specs for this puppy:

  • Slider form factor
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • 8 GB of internal storage
  • 2.6-inch display
  • Walkman player 4.0
  • Stereo speakers and a 3.5mm audio jack
  • Dedicated multimedia buttons

It’s not much but it’ll have to do – at least until next week if Sony Ericsson indeed pulls the canopy off this little guy at MWC. So what do you guys think – is anyone looking forward to the Hikaru?

hopefully this isnt too little too late for sony.

Lets just now put a 3.5 millimeter headjack in a couple of our phones instead of that stupid connector thing that we have in all of our walkman music phones or pretty much any other phone for that matter. That sounds like a brilliant idea!!!

Good luck and best wishes Sony Ericsson

Knowing Sony Ericsson’s track record, anyone wanna take any bets on it not coming out until so far after its announcement that it wont even be relevant any more (cough cough w960 cough)

Has there really been that much difference between the Cybershot and Walkman models anyway? They seem to have just been visual variations on the same phone.

In any case, that mockup is once again yawn-inspiring. You would think that there are only so many takes on the same design, but Sony Ericsson delivers again! Perhaps some new designers would be beneficial in turning the business around, eh?

before my BB i had a S500i, and it seems that SE is trying to be the next moto.
they haven’t made an noticeable strides in UI in the past couple if years.
design wise SE has two modes generic candy bar and generic slider. My S500i looked exactly like the Rogers SE W580.
if SE comes out with a android equipped X1 or X2 i might try it out.
But as it stands Sony Ericsson is trailing in all departments by the majority of cell phone makers.
Maybe joining the walkman and cybershop devisions together would not be such a bad idea, best of both worlds

Personally, I think this device is pretty nice. My experiences with Sony product have been great all around and having three in one from Sony should be pretty convenient. Keep at it Sony! let’s see and X2 while you’re at it! That would be GREAT!

My sony W810i was the best phone i’ve ever had. Until I graduated to using a smartphone. I’d like to go back to sony but I have a few reservations about them now. The 580i walkman had that notoriously terrible issue with the buttons cracking, the z750 couldn’t have had cheaper materials to be built with, and the new w760…. it’s still just a non-inspiring design. And on the smartphone front, the X1a was such monster, a year and a half ago. Too little too late. Someone needs to light a fire under their asses and get them back into the competitive feature phone game. “walkman” and “cyber-shot” branding isn’t going to get them anywhere if their phones don’t capture the harmony of design, and functionality.
