Google launches mobile Book Search for Android and iPhone

Just in time for the expected Kindle 2 announcement, Google is apparently trying to steal some of the pre-announcement hype by launching its own mobile book reading service. Previously available on for desktop computers, Google Book Search is now available via a new mobile web site, providing on-the-go access to nearly 1.5 million public domain books. Point your mobile browser to books.google.com/m where you can peruse its book list via category, find the poplar titles in the “Featured Books” list or search by author, title or subject. The web site is optimized for Android and the iPhone and they are currently the only supported mobile platforms with no indication as to whether or not mobile Book Search will be expanded to support Windows Mobile, S60, Palm or Blackberry. Most Google products end up being extended to those platforms so we assume that same principle will apply here but for the time being, G1 and iPhone owners can flaunt their ability to read the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes for free while riding the morning subway to work.

    I love how the iphone has full battery, full coverage, and full wifi. and the g1 has 1 bar wifi, 2 bars coverage, and 50% battery. that’s bgr for you though.

    Just tried it on my WinMo phone. YAY! It works with Opera 9.5. I haven’t tried IE yet.

    Well, I take that back. It sort of works with Windows Mobile Opera, but it is buggy. I can browse the site without easily, however when I open up a book it will show then disappear spontaneously.

    Another great free service from Google! Unlike most, Google is willing to take risk and hold a steady course, even in times of great uncertainty.

    Thanks Google for your continued commitment to trail blazing and adding value!

    Traditional media should start providing this type of value, and then maybe some of the previous glory held could be restored!

    @Jack
    Sorry to burst your conspiracy theory but BGR had nothing to do with that G1 vs. iPhone image that you perceive to be showing the G1 as “bad” and the iPhone as “good”. Both images were straight from Google’s website. Check the read link if you don’t believe me.

    Good job Google!!! However, it seems like lately Google only focuses on just those two platforms.

    I wish Google would make its own OS platform its main and primary focus, especially against Apple and Microsoft. Google needs to just continue its progress for the Google line of phones and then every so often throw the others a bone.

    The G1 is halfway dead because it’s their primary phone over the iphone. At least that seems to make sense. Make your software for your hardware and then test it?
