Amazon Kindle 2 official photos, pricing and availability leaked

Looks like those Kindle 2 photos we published back in October were spot on. Additional official-looking photos of the Kindle 2 have emerged and the new e-reader from Amazon looks sweet! If the pencil comparison is accurate, then the new Kindle appears to shed much of its width, coming in as thin as the Sony PRS-505 reader, and little bit longer than both the original Kindle and the Sony Reader. As we reported earlier, the Kindle 2 also appears to have a metal back with built-in speakers. Start putting those pennies aside as the Kindle 2 is expected to hit Amazon on the 24th of February for $359, the same price as the current Kindle. No apparent price increase, yay! This is still all unconfirmed but the information seems to jive with previous rumors and the source of the leak, MobileRead, is well-known in the e-book world. We will all get the skinny on this reader and its features on Monday, until then enjoy the photos after the jump.

When the price comes down to $99 I will buy one. Used books are cheap and durable. It’s a very high price for convenience.

I have had my Kindle 1.0 since October and I never leave home without it. I have a huge collection of regular books, and they take up too much space in my home. I am also concerned about the cost to the environment from all these paper books and the publishing process. My Kindle allows me to carry a library with me, look up definitions, search Wikipedia and the Web, make notes on what I’ve read, highlight and save clippings, grab a newspaper or magazine and so much more. I’m glad that the new version has smaller keys on the sides and slightly larger keypads, but otherwise, I am thrilled with my kindle. I love having a keyboard and I hope they never take those away. I wrote this with mine.

People should also know that the price includes anytime/anywhere Internet access on Sprint’s fast EVDO wireless network.

That’s access to google etc from wherever you are at any time.

They’ve just expanded the network coverage to include all 50 states and more rural areas.

24/7 – no added monthly or hourly cost. That’s worth quite a bit for me, considering how much it costs a month for cellphone data access.
