Sprint enables MMS for BlackBerry with OS 4.5 release
Fresh off the heels of its release of OS 4.5.0.131 for the Curve 8330 and Pearl 8130, Sprint users have been hammering our inbox with reports that Sprint has finally enabled the BlackBerry users running OS 4.5 to send and receive MMS. It’s long been rumored that Sprint would enable MMS alongside the official release of OS 4.5 on its network and many people have recently been reporting that Sprint reps were dropping some major hints that a new OS was just around the corner. Think it’s too good to be true? Well then why not try it out for yourself. Hit up the read link to grab OS 4.5.0.131, load it up and then resend your service books. Believe it or not, you’ll be all set to begin firinf off some MMS to your non-smartphone using pals.
Thanks, Sarge!

well its not working…but its there follow the links and you will see it. can anyone who has it post their impressions of it
Sometimes I don’t understand carriers and all these other companies. I understand that they want to bring the newest things to phones and give the best service, but it amazes me that some basic things are left off phones and then when they come its this huge thing. MMS is the norm these days and doesn’t make sense that some phones can’t do that. Same thing can be said about Apple and copy/paste, people love what’s on the phone but sometimes the basic stuff is what people want.
Pretty standard for everyone who already has 4.5 on their phones or one of the leaked versions.
Docs 2 go is on there now, better memory management, I think mine has a bit more snap to it when selecting menus and scrolling around…..YMMV
@backbeat – My curve on 4.3 DOES have ROAM ONLY, and its not some “limitation” its up to the carrier taking it off the software updates. Much like updates for Instinct removed the ##USB modem hack.
As for GSM, cant compare GSM and CDMA in terms of roaming capability.
So please explain to me, what you mean by hard code – Im not being a prick, I just need to understand what your saying.
You mean to tell me that VZW and Sprint BB users did NOT have OS 4.5 Docs to Go all this time????????
How can ya’ll stand it?
@RogerA: GSM/CDMA Roaming can be compared where the Blackberry network settings are concerned, as it is a simple matter of toggling the network setting for newer -non- US Blackberrys. This setting has been removed from newer US-branded Blackberrys and no one has an explanation for why.
If you were to load an updated Telus OS onto your Sprint Blackberry, after having deleted the vendor.xml file, you still would not be able to toggle roaming, although those on Telus/Canada are capable.
Loaded 4.5 and resent service books. MMS works flawlessly. I thought this day would never come..
Well mms is cool and all but there’s a few other neet things too – the browser is updated and OTA updates are now available
Also I have seen slightly better performance and a slight increase in memory

@opti
Working flawlessly as in the way MMS does on every other carrier? Or you can send them just fine but you get a Picture Mail link same as before when someone sends you one?
So tomorrow this will be official tissue, better late than never and it good that it’s a double whammy with 4.5 and mms
Anyone know if the official os 4.5 still has sync issues with Macs? I installed a bootleg a couple months ago and it erased approx 10% of my contacts.
@ Backbeat
I have a Sprint BB 8330 which was running MTS mobility (Canadian company) O.S. 4.5.0.56 and I had Roam only option and it worked perfectly. Prior to Sprint installing a Cell tower near my office, Verizon was the only CDMA company with coverage in the area. It had become a habit to switch to roam only once i got in the parking lot in the morning. I only had to do this for about 4 months then Sprint powered up a tower and i no longer have to perform this task but my point is i am an American CDMA BB user who, without roam only, would have been SOL (pardon the expression).
^Interesting. The closest bit of info we’ve been able to locate is (where GSM is concerned) that this variation depends on the device ID which is hard-coded. New BBs have been tested with sim cards removed and cell radios turned off, then as soon as the sim is installed, there is no ability to switch from 3G to GSM, whereas Canadian BBs do not have the same limitation. Strange! I have to wonder if yours (and presumably any others in your location with your company) had BBs that had been specifically provisioned for roam-only due to service limitations.
This has been one of the most odd circumstances to come from RIM in a long time.
i got mms working this morning. very nice! aye!
I just installed and MMS works fine, I got a picture mail link when I sent a MMS to myself
I can’t believe how much of a pain in the $&#*# upgrading the OS is with Blackberry. OMG
Resent service books, on my curve with 4.5 and it now shows “send a MMS” but when I try and send it it fails every time!! Please help
@steve: As compared to what? WinMo?
I had the beta 131 and couldn’t roam at all which sucks because all other 4.5 OS I could
Hey Michael, my name is BJ DeHut and I am a representative for Sprint. Thank you for increasing the awareness of the recent addition of MMS to our flagship RIM products. The users of the Pearl and Curve have been waiting for this OS update for some time now, and this is proof that we are listening to the needs of our customers. Anyway, thank you for covering the MMS update!
and uh no way sprint did lock it as so verizion if you work for them they were shipped to all carriers working carries added the things they needed changed like hoe sprints new updates dont atomaticly change from music to phonecall
MMS still not working… even after resending service books multiple times…. Anyone got any ideas??
@Burgundy
Might be worth it to go to crackberry.com and followed the “Nuked Berry” instructions so you can reload the OS and resend service books. The first time (yesterday) I installed Sprint’s OS 4.5 mine got nuked and i had to start from scratch. After loading the OS again and sending service book …. I’m golden.
sprint.com/downloads
then click smartphones and the phone you have. then os 4.5 will be there. thats if you want to download it from the sprint webcite.
What about if I am on a BES? Can I still upgrade to 4.5?
