Toshiba unveils TG01 smartphone, takes aim at iPhone

Toshiba plans to wow us all at MWC 2009 with a Windows Mobile handset that rocks a blazing fast processor and jaw-dropping display. The TG01 will be the first mobile handset to incorporate the 1GHz snapdragon processor from Qualcomm and will sport a 4.1″ WVGA resistive touchscreen with on-screen trackpad, HSDPA, aGPS, G-sensor, microSDHC support and DivX support. Toshiba calls it “faster, slimmer and better than the iPhone” – fighting words if we’ve ever heard them. The handset is reported to run Windows Mobile 6.1 with full flash support which suggests it will ship with Internet Explorer Mobile 6 as well. With Toshiba boasting that “We’ve taken all the technology from our TVs and put that into the screen”, we are already lining up our favorite movies and converting them to DivX for viewing on this drool-worthy screen. Will this be enough to revive Toshiba’s smartphone business? Only time and some solid carrier deals will tell.

With specs like this, WinMo’s performance issues shouldn’t be an issue, I’d think. (Of course, some people still don’t like the WinMo UI in general, and this won’t solve that)

Since the iPhone, everyone is gunning for it. It’s what every manufacturer is shooting to beat, but they always seem to fall short.

I highly doubt that at&t would pick this up since its a direct competition with the iphone and apple wouldn’t like that.

I just hope that they have 850/1900 3G, if so I would be more interested in this than the N97.

I enjoy Windows Mobile, don’t know why so many hate it but I guess there will always be people against something they won’t take time learning.
I hear the same thing about Symbian S60.

HSDPA would suggest it’s going to be GSM, right?

Also, with that amount of power, speed, screen, and Flash we will finally forgive WM for all its UI shortcomings.

To me, the most exciting aspect of the original iphone release was the idea that it would change the mobile industry. It may not be the best phone on the planet, but the iphone has paved the way for handsets such as the one in the above article. I am very excited to see what new types of devices are released in ‘09. Perhaps one of them may even be able to knock the iphone right off the top of the hill!!!!

    @EPS,

mo it won’t. The sheer number of projects for windows mobile to replace or mask it’s UI should be enough to tell you that most people in general hate it. Hell even the major manufacturers are developing custom interfaces so you don’t have to see the internal one microsoft created. Windows mobile is one ugly OS.

This article goes a long way to explain the success of the iphone and the sudden mob hatred of WM. Bottom line, people today cant think for themselves and are content to follow the crowd even if it goes against their better judgement. As for me, WM is the best OS currently available and this phone, iphone killer or not, is an awesome device.

    Sums it up well.

    Wmo fails.

At least they are putting in a processor that might be able to handle such a poorly coded OS.

this is the thing, apple will never be able to do what winmo does!
we CAN make a million different UI!
cause we CAN do anything we want with our phone!
i have an omnia, every week i have a “new” phone. cause i change my icons, my background, the way it responds to certain programs!
    i can CUSTOMIZE.
    the iphone cant!
    why would you like that?
you all must be super powerful…cause then i could understand not wanting to be in power sometimes…
with winmo we have ULTRA powerful phones that can even be iphones or android phones.
the power is in our hands!
and when this phone drops with WINDOWS MOBILE 6.5 (7) its a wrap!
    hang it up iFanboys :)
