Toshiba unveils TG01 smartphone, takes aim at iPhone
Toshiba plans to wow us all at MWC 2009 with a Windows Mobile handset that rocks a blazing fast processor and jaw-dropping display. The TG01 will be the first mobile handset to incorporate the 1GHz snapdragon processor from Qualcomm and will sport a 4.1″ WVGA resistive touchscreen with on-screen trackpad, HSDPA, aGPS, G-sensor, microSDHC support and DivX support. Toshiba calls it “faster, slimmer and better than the iPhone” – fighting words if we’ve ever heard them. The handset is reported to run Windows Mobile 6.1 with full flash support which suggests it will ship with Internet Explorer Mobile 6 as well. With Toshiba boasting that “We’ve taken all the technology from our TVs and put that into the screen”, we are already lining up our favorite movies and converting them to DivX for viewing on this drool-worthy screen. Will this be enough to revive Toshiba’s smartphone business? Only time and some solid carrier deals will tell.

@jenkman91, please help me understand, how a superior product can be called a failure?
True, MS did not update WinMo for years, letting it age. However, it is still far more capable than BlackBerry, Apple, Palm and Symbian combined. It can do everything that BlackBerry, Apple, Palm and Symbian can. However, neither of them can do everything WinMo is capable of. How is that a failure?
And Vista. Aside from a popular sport of drunk Windows bashing, what are the disadvantages of it? It is in many ways better than Apple and Linux. Just the same – it can do everything Apple OS and Linux can, but neither of them can do everything Vista could. Vista is superior when it comes to productivity. I prefer it appearances to Apple (let alone Linux). How is that a failure?
Windows Mobile was great…back in 2000. I’d received an old Dell Axim running WinMo from my old boss. The thing was super functional, but honestly was a pain in the rear to use.
I couldn’t imagine a similar OS running on a cell phone almost a decade later. I hear WinMo has not really changed much over the years. Yeah, time has passed WinMo by.
@Mike,
I have been using winmo ever since my Cassiopia. Loved my ipaq 5455. But compared to everythings else, it really is an ugly OS. Now a days it does not stack up against iPhone or Android. I even like Blackberry better. iPhone and Android apps feel next generation where winmo feels like a throwback from ages ago. You obviously have not played with numerous iPhone apps. Now that I have however, microsoft and winmo can shove it. Lots of us have probably played with winmo and hated it. Don’t go assuming that just because we hate it, we jumped on a bandwagon? Your saying we all have to love it of we have some issue? Retarded.

@MiniMe,
It’s a failure because it has continually dropped I’m marketshare. Nokia S60 is still king of the hill. Now RIM has surpassed winmo marketshare as well as iphone. It has been out longer that. iPhone and has let blackberry and iPhone surpass it even though it’s newer. How can you NOT call that a failure? Yours is an opinion in capability. The numbers and percents tell the real story. Winmo is a failure whether you recognize it or not.

@ Christopher Cox, if you knew any better you’d see that i’m only talking about a certain handful of people who in reality, have actually not used WinMo before and are talking badly about it. Granted, being on some online website, we don’t know who has and has not used it before, and you calling my statement “retarded” doesn’t justify anything. I never said that the iPhone and Android OS’s are bad cause they’re not, they’re great. You’re being ridiculous lmao, put a little more thought into your posts next time, bub.

I’m not going to bother clicking on your link because ‘I’ prove your blanket statement wrong.
I hate WinMo because i owned a PPC6700 for 3 years and it was horrible and then my girlfriend got a Moto Q and it had the same set of problems that my 6700 had. Those are 2 totaly different phones. That leaves 1 common problem, Windows Mobile.
My girlfriend uses an Instinct now which she says is 100% better than her old Moto Q.
I on the other hand like the iPhone but will not buy one because i want a keyboard and i hate AT&T because they tried to rob me back when they were named Cellular One.
that reply was for boogalooboy.
looks like the reply button doesn’t work.
i have an omnia, i had a 6800 and a i730 all windows mobile. all rocked!
we dont get the developers with the pretty programs RIGHT NOW, but we will always be more powerful and be able to do more
Plain, WinMo sucks. Its a pain to use, looks awful and makes me not want this phone. Too bad too, it looks like nice hardware.
Everybody is taking aim at the iPhone, what’s new?
its windows mobile so automatic fail.
A lot of hate towards Windows Mobile from you Iphone saps. Truth be told, Windows Mobile is much more powerful and customizable than the IPhone but who needs customization/originality? Steve “The Showman” Jobs says you’ll take that plain, dumbed down OS and UI and will love it!
I’m a Nokia N95 owner. Considering how much that phone costs the “you’re just mad you can’t afford an IPhone” argument is dead!
Any OS other then M$ Winmo and this could have had a fighting chance.

Looks like seriously killer hardware. They’d better use a capacitive touchscreen, though, or it’ll fail miserably.
I dunno about capacitive touch – some of those icons look pretty small. I can see a lot of really angry users plunking down the wrong one.
why everyone wants to kill iphone? so iphone is the benchmark. if u wanna kill iphone than create something better, unique, outstanding, more inovative & far difrent spec/os/ui, new behavior, new icon, new style. how could u be a killer with (just common) winmo? its only a common pda.
A lot of people are waiting for this phone to come out, but the delay, makes you wounder, could it be that the phone can’t deliver what it promised, and Toshiba was too optimistic with its features, does it have bugs that are delaying its wide release. Things that make you go hum! Specially when a product is not out by the promised release and later we find out that it wasn’t ready, and was release with bugs, to fix them later. Doesn’t it sound like Microsoft’s way of doing business? Maybe just maybe I will wait to buy it to see what others (consumers, not bias reviewers) would have to say about it.
Can your iPhone do this:

The Toshiba TG01 can. Don’t ding the phone for having WinMo 6.1 on it (it may soon have 6.5 for that matter). Ding it for not doing something that you need done, but not for the OS under it. It’s more than capable or most things, and superior for other things. Does it look “old?” Maybe, but so do I… guess that’s why I’m not offended by it
