BlackBerry users aren’t through the storm yet, BES still down for many

Yesterday we reported a major data outage plaguing BlackBerry users across the country and while certain regions seem to be back in action today, many BlackBerry users are still left wondering when their service might be restored. Issues in the southern region reportedly resulted from the severing of a fiber line but that can hardly account for the massive outages experienced all day long, spanning from coast to coast. We’re still waiting for word on possible causes but while service has been restored for many BlackBerry users at this point, many more are still left without data. We spoke to our pals at AT&T, one of the carriers whose customers are still affected, and information was scarce at best. All they could tell us was that BES is still down for many, it’s a RIM issue and RIM’s engineers are “working on it”. We know several areas of the Northeast are still without service, including many in the New York / New Jersey region, but AT&T claims only enterprise customers are still affected at this point.
Unfortunately for those still without data, all you can do is wait patiently for service to be restored and try to maintain your indoor voice when calling and asking for a credit on your bill. Remember, this is a RIM issue so there really isn’t anything carriers can do. We’re well past the 24-hour mark, making this one of the more serious outages in recent history and at this point all we can say is… Step it up RIM! Drop us a line in the comments and let us know if you’re back in business or still twiddling your thumbs.

That was meant for Scott, the guy who harped about multiple points of failure
Don’t all emails have to go through RIM’s servers, regardless? Isn’t that the whole point of the blackberry system? If his isn’t going through the RIM network, then its not really a BB!
Big Red has been working fine in California. No outages with any of our remote users either.
Verizon for those who don’t know who Big Red is.
But when someone uses A blackberry there are possible multiple points of failure. If my data connection with Sprint stops working I dont need to worry about an outside company trying to fix it. I still dont understand why RIM is the single point for all the mail going through. Why can’t they setup servers inside AT&T, VZW, Sprint etc rather than hosting it all themselves?
RIM/Blackberry is so far ahead of everyone when it comes to messaging reliability. The iPhone, while a fantastic device, has a long, long way to go in the messaging area. Any iphone user will tell you about the spinning wheel and “sending” bar and what one believed to be a sent message winding up in the outbox. A bi-annual RIM outage is a tiny price to pay for the overall productivity their devices afford.
Ever since I got the Storm I’ve had nothing but problems. I believed Verizon’s BS advertising (the UI on this thing is slow as crap) and I do not like the click screen. Now I haven’t been able to use BES since Sunday night.
The Fuze is calling my name…… and I’m close to getting it.
Man it was horrible because two of the blackberries were fine into logging to bis. then my own personal bb, gain access last night but kept resending the same message over and over. Now the bold and 8900 are just dead. I have no clue but I’m holding on for dear comfort.
And ill rather have a bb over any iphone and windows mocrap!
My AT&T BB service stopped on Saturday. It is still down on Tuesday afternoon. I can send emails via BB, but not receive. I am not an enterprise customer.
Kack Tee, “By the way, never using a BB because of multiple whatever nonsense is absurd”
Blackberry’s rely on:
BB Service
Your mail server/provider
Internet connection
WM/Palms (other smartphones) rely on:
Your mail server/provider
Internet connection
Two Points of failure is better than three and this freaking posting on BGR is PROOF of my point. You never hear “Treo/Touch [whatever besides BB] users are experiencing a data[/email] outage” – It just doesn’t happen. A FEW smartphone users using the same email server/provider could experience an outage sure. A wireless provider could have a data outage effecting ALL smartphones, dumbphones internet connection sure…but ONLY BLACKBERRY could experience a Blackberry service outage.
John, “Tard” & “That was meant for Scott, the guy who harped about multiple points of failure”
This post/article on BGR is PROOF of my point you neanderthal.
For those BB fanboys pissed off at me for pointing out the obvious with BB’s and displaying rampant stupidity at the same time; I’ll give the BB one thing, they are extremely stable devices…There, I said something nice about them.
^^^ wow…me thinks that came out wrong…grr…wish there was an edit button here…
Comparing anything about Blackberry/Rim to anything having to do with Palm/Treo etc is even more absurd than the 1000 points of light absurdity. I think Palm sold a total of 17 devices in 2008. Their future relies 100% on 1 new product, the Pre. Apple will release a new iphone immediately after the Pre and it will have whatever features needed to make buyers quickly forget the Pre and bury Palm once and for all.
Jack Tee…you don’t like palms…good for you.
Oh and by the way Mr. Pot (calling kettle black), hows this that it’s absurd for me to not like BB’s for a perfectly VALID reason yet you can’t stand palm’s cause in your opinion there are better devices out there? WTF is wrong with you bubs? Little case of nutts upstairs?
Verizon Chicago-
I was down from late AM yesterday to about 7PM last night. All is back up and well now. Pretty much my whole backlog of e-mails(64) hit my Storm one after the other last night. Annoying yes……..but I’m glad the system is back up and working.
@ mike
…because it’s a blackberry first then a phone second. Blackberry’s at first we’re only email and wap devices. They didn’t have phone features until the 6200 series and no dedicated send/end keys till the 7100 series.
I never call my blackberry a “phone”, that’s disrespectful
multiple points of failure? That may be true. But its better than windows mobile, which is just one big fat point of FAIL. OS FAIL.
Oh no, I like Palms fine. I had a Treo for awhile, but they just don’t sell as well as BBs, iPhones etc. Their OS is very nice and their devices are good. The problem is they are not marketed well and they have too much debt. The original point was about comparing popular devices produced by a profitable company to Palm, who will probably be acquired or lbo’d by the investors. What else does Palm sell that has a chance of improving their financials?
Blackberry sucks.
Matt S “multiple points of failure? That may be true. But its better than windows mobile, which is just one big fat point of FAIL. OS FAIL”
I’m in no way going to try to say that WM is dead reliable or anything, it DEFINETELY has issues; no doubt. But I’m an EXTREMELY heavy business user with a strong decades long tech background (but I’ll give you this, it was MS Tech, Systems Admin, Exchange, SQL, workstations etc) and I’ve tried BB’s, I’ve tried Palms both Palm OS and WM, I’ve tried other smartphone devices (WM) and reliability issues aside there is no other smartphone platform as CAPABLE as WM…I can sync individual mailbox folders if I want, move items throughout my entire exchange mailbox, calendar, contacts etc seemlessly sync to my mailbox; just overall for exchange connectivity (and for me this is the SOLE reason for having a smartphone) WM is massively superior to all other platforms out there and Palm’s implementation of WM is about the best implementation I’ve ever experienced (ironic they did the best with it IMHO).
From what I have seen/heard etc the iPhone isn’t too shabby in it’s connectivity with exchange but I have no use for a music/entertainment focused device, plus AT&T stinks where I live, so…

I guess I’m unclear as to what this has to do with anything in this thread relating to a BB outage? When I pick a handset to use I don’t give a rats butt about how well it’s marketed or how well the company is doing, I care how well it WORKS.
So Scott, you care about how well a device works, say for example like a BB, but care nothing about who or how it will be supported? I guess 5 o’clock is just another hour in your world, its obvious happy hour started hours ago for you. I like and respect an early hh, which is why I choose bb. How can one work thru an outage? Cheers.
