Forget Microsoft CE, Sidekick LX 2009 to run NetBSD
According to some sleuthing and inside information provided to the folks at Hiptop3.com, the upcoming rumored Sidekick LX 2009/Blade may run the open source NetBSD OS and not some funky Windows CE version with the Danger UI tacked on top. Rumors of the Sidekick getting some Windows CE love began circulating after Microsoft acquired Danger in early 2008. It is hard to perpetuate those rumors in the face of a late October 2008 job posting at Microsoft “seeking a talented NetBSD software developer interested in helping Danger (a subsidiary of Microsoft) ship the next generation of Danger’s Sidekick platform.” Mailing list posts from Danger employees dating as far back as September 2007 suggest that NetBSD may have been the chosen OS long before the Microsoft acquisition. Rather than scrap the pre-acquisition progress made by the Danger team, Microsoft apparently has decided to push forward with this open source OS. Does the leaked spec sheet from a few days ago and this new NetBSD information make you a little bit more excited for this much anticipated refresh of the Sidekick line?

I’d been hoping for WiFi and a Webkit browser that doesn’t need to use Danger’s proxy… HotSpot @Home wouldn’t hurt, either — but that’s just for getting a signal in my bunker of an office.
I had been a long-time sidekick user and switched to a blackberry about a year ago due to the severe lack of innovation in the sidekicks. this has me rethinking my decision. if the spec sheet is correct the new sidekick may be a real contender in the smartphone market.

thats awsome. sk3 was my 2nd smartphone i ever had. compare to other smartphones out there, sk3 did what it needed to do. oh and it had copy n paste, sorry iphone.

It is definitely one of the best smartphones out on the market currently. We’ll see what new competition the Pre brings though.

Yes it is, it has all the general features needed to be classified a “smartphone” : push email, IM, browser, Open SDK.

Look…I have always really REALLY enjoyed the form factor of the Sidekick..its a lil thick..but it fits so comfortable in the hands… my thumbs NEVER hurt like they do now with my Nokia E71..just so cramped.. I might consider going back to SK. if the OS is that solid…to bad they dont use S60

This sidekick will probably come out this summer. That’s when they usually spank some ass. Any whoo, I love sidekicks and I vowed to own a sidekick as long as they keep making them buuuut Sidekick is no where near the best phone out. I have a Sidekick LX and I won’t lie; I was disappointed a bit. I bet this phone will be the shit though! Microsoft + Sidekick = PRIME

I’m planning to switch to a better phone like the Blackberry Bold because face it … the sidekick never changed just that record shitty videos n differ styles it suxxxx … it gets slow as hell or frozen each time I type fast or wen I flip it … its time for a better phone cuz on da real there r better phones out thereee!

I am so fuckin waiting for that sidekick lx 2009… some people are saying that the sidekick lx 2009 is coming out on april 1… but I dont see thing… and when is the hell coming outtt
its supposed to be coming out next month, i spoke to one of the guys at t-mobile and its supposed to be touch screen and a thinner design.. but still with the same kinda of keyboard and flip action

I have a sidekick lx and I love the lights and aim everything else sucks aim and the lights is the only thing that keeps me wit the phone service sucks calls don’t come threw pricey& the internet sucks plus the lame camera its like we don’t even have one
But I like the lights
