Acer to launch smartphone on February 16

It’s long been rumored that Acer was going to be launching a smartphone sometime this year and not too long ago Acer indeed confirmed that it’s all set to show off the fruit of its labor sometime in Q1 2009. We might not know anything solid about the phone but now we can at least say it’ll be unveiled to the world on February 16th by Acer’s President and CEO Gianfranco Lanci at Mobile World Congress. The phone was designed by Acer and the remnants of E-TEN, the smartphone manufacturer Acer bought out in mid-2008. But just like we said before, we’re not getting our hopes up for anything truly innovative as this thing will be running Windows Mobile. Fingers crossed Acer at least used 6.5.

    I’ve been looking forward to seeing what Acer will come up with. I know it will certainly be something that will keep us talking.

    How do you know it will run winmo?
    Acer run linux on their aspire one; why not Android on a phone?

    Let’s hope it’s in some way innovative in design, or UI. If it’s released without any “wow” factor, it’s already a dud. I’d like to see a full touch screen (HD quality would be nice) w/ landscape slider. wi-fi. Anything better than a 3mp camera (to make it a decent choice for pics) microUSB and all that… and of course compatibility on att’s network!

    @TRV$,
    You never know…
    Eten build fairly decent devices – though their screens all max at 2.8”, so whatever acer do, I’m hoping for a bigger screen!
    That asode, it’ll obviously be better than the iPhone – it’d take Apple to make sth worse!

    @ celz.

    Then just get an iPhone and jailbreak it.

    My buddy got a G1 and after the first 2 or 3 nights I went to his house and got it Jailbroken and now it’s pretty amazing.

    So far in 2009, HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Asus, Lenovo, Huawei, Garmin and others have announced plans to release Android devices. I wouldn’t be surprised if Acer joins the crowd.

    It will be nice when there are finally a variety of Android smartphones to choose from.

    ETEN used to build WM smartphones that came with mobile TV (DVB-T and DVB-H) support. That was truly innovative. I hope that would appear in the new Acer phones.
