Verizon Wireless to cut prices on select handsets and EV-DO modems

Verizon Wireless customers in the market for a new phone may want to wait a bit before bringing home the latest and greatest Verizon has to offer. We have it on good authority that Verizon will be discounting a handful of handsets and a few broadband access modems, possibly as soon as January 22nd. This would be an unusual out of cycle discount as the current rebate sheet continues until January 31st. Select hardware from Verizon Wireless, LG, Casio, Motorola, Samsung and RIM will supposedly see their mail-in rebates increased from $50 to $70. Sure the out of pocket expense is the same but a $20 discount is a $20 discount even if it comes in the form of a rebate check. With the current state of the economy, we’ll take any discount we can get. Hit the jump for a full list of discounted hardware according to our ninja.

Lol. $20 discount! Yeah…that’s a winning marketing scheme. Reduce the prices of the phone by $20 BEFORE the mail-in rebate will be a better way to go about this.
I’d like to see an unlimited package for $99/mo that includes everything. Maybe one day.
*yawn*
I’m ready for a new phone, nothing interesting there.
Need to stop with mailing back rebates make it illegal and revise the return policy no waiting for money back in mail give money back immediately on spot and reduce the touch pro pricing and stop neurting the devices

Any chance they are doing this to prepare for the Niagara?
Since all the phones on Verizon went to an online discount a week ago, I imagine this will be an extra online discount. No mail-in rebate.
They went to the online discount AFTER I had just purchased a XV6900 no less.
when’s the iphone coming the verizon? ive been waiting forever!
i sure hope they are preparing for the niagara
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the prices before the rebate jump $20, then the ending price would end up still being the same. That would sure help us in agent stores.
they aren’t
YOU DON’T KNOW THAT!
So does the rebate get paid by Verizon? Or ultimately is the rebate funded by the handset maker (maybe VZ adminsters the program, but ultimately settles up with the handset OEM as a discount on the hardware?)
Nope just verizon being idiots a iphone with gps disabled by verizon piece of shit
Looks like this is being done to re-up folks for another year or two on contract, in light of the $50- Boost Monthly Unlimited plan that starts on 01/22/2009.
CDMAuser, try sprint for a plan like that.. I would take it, but sprint doesnt have the iphone otherwise i’d be in
I really don’t think they are going to increase prices to compensate for the higher rebates. Now if you are getting a “free” phone you will pay $70 then get a $70 rebate.
Yes the rebate is funded by the manufactor that is why there is a rebate and not an instant discount in the stores.
This rebate will not be in addition to the online discount. You will most likely see tomorrow on the select phones that the online discount is upped to $70.
But i do….but I do….
Too many crap phones. That’s always been Verizon’s problem.
considering everyone is complaining about all of these rebates – why don’t you shop at best buy mobile? phones? same. contracts? same. hassle? none. commissioned employees? absent. instant/mail-in rebates? none.
think about it.
crap phones? The service is the best. Who cares how awesome a phone might be if it cant be used due to network service issues?
Well let’s see when the original Iphone came out Apple had AT&T sign an exclusive 5 year agreement to be the only carriers in the US with the propietary phone. When the Iphone 3G was released the contract was extended another 2 years. Plus do you really think Steve Jobs could handle a REAL 3G network such as Verizon. It would send him right back on another medical leave.
I very much doubt they will drop the price of the Storm so soon. It’s still selling way too well.
@ jorGeorge
I hate to burst your bubble, and as an avid BB user myself it pains me, but the general public for the most part does not give a rats @$$ about a new Blackberry (except maybe the PerlFlip when we finally get it, but that’s because of the form factor).
Now knocking down the price of the Curve and 8830 are def getting ready for the Niagara (Bold), but I would bet money that you and I will be able to get our Niagaras the first week without waiting in lines or having to order them because as awesome as the device is gonna be, there just wont be that hype.
