The top 10 things we hate about the iPhone

Look, we love our iPhones as much as the person, but at this late point in the game, there are some things that are just inexcusable. Here’s our top 10 things we hate about the iPhone, and we’ll post up our top 10 things we hate about the Bold later on. Feel free to chime in with your own! Also note that we’re talking about the iPhone in its default state, not a jailbreaked unit. Here’s our list in no particular order:

1. You can’t use custom sounds for email notifications, SMS, etc.

2. Copy and paste. Sorry, but it’s ridiculous at this point.

3. When forwarding an email with an attachment, the iPhone sends it out locally. That means if you have a 1MB attachment, you have to send 1MB worth of data when forwarding. This doesn’t happen on Windows Mobile or the BlackBerry — it’s sent from the server. Not cool.

4. No unified inbox. At this point, there’s no reason you should have to go through the rigmarole of switching through tabs and endless menus to get to another email inbox. Cut this down, give us color-coded emails that correspond with that particular account — something!

5. Video recording. Again, it’s technically possible, but we don’t have it.

6. The touch screen capture button in the Camera application is horrid. Let’s use one of the volume keys or something to take a picture. It’s not a good setup.

7. You can’t forward text messages. Something that is a no-brainer just isn’t here.

8. There isn’t a way to delete individual calls from the recent call list. Not that we need to hide anything from our girlfriends or anything…

9. No file structure that is user-accessible. That means you can’t save any attachment that isn’t a photo, you can’t download files from websites, etc. Additionally, each application can only access its own file structure so you can forget about doing anything sexy.

10. The push-background notification service is still nowhere to be found.

I love this list because it’s spot on and hopefully Apple takes it into consideration. I honestly believe that Apple loves to rest on its laurels and believes that people will buy their products with or without these features…and judging by its sales they may be right. It’s not like these problems were not brought up when the first iPhone came out but yet they were still not addressed when the 3G itineration was released.

Another thing one has to consider is that most of these missing features go hand in hand. If one needs to copy a number and send it to someone they must be able to multitask and go into the contacts and copy the number like it is done on Windows Mobile and Blackberry devices…and if you wanted to send that copied number to more than one contact you’d need the forward feature if you already sent it and needed it to go out to more than one contact. Some of these simple things that Apple has omitted is one of the reasons why people call the iphone a toy because copy and paste, forwarding messages, push e-mail and sending out, as well as downloading large documents and files are crucial parts of smartphones.

My guess on the Bold list will all be things that the iPhone does and the BB doesn’t (or not as good). Thats more of a comparison vs. a true list. I can’t think of 10 things I truly HATE about the Bold but I sure can on the iPhone. More like 15 things.

The iPhone sucks as a phone. Bottom Line.
Mine is a $100 more expensive iPod at this point.

I just switched to an iphone two weeks ago from a BB Curve and I COMPLETELY agree with this list. There are a ton of things I miss from the BB OS. The only things keeping me from turning this thing back in are imap gmail and awesome amount of apps

    +1 on MMS

About the unified Inbox…I actually prefer separate Inboxes, but currently it takes waaaay too much effort to switch Inboxes. How about a grey bar at the top with the account name, and swipe left/right to select different accounts/Inboxes?

    Also: landscape Email/SMS/Notes/ANYTHING

to all those that are wondering why we stick to the iphone….

the iphone is like that boyfriend/girlfriend that snores, can be a total bitch sometimes, and is way too flirty with members of the opposite sex. however they were there for you when you were fired from your job, always gets the right gift and looks hella good on your arm when you go out on a date.

i cant live with it, cant live without it.

I thought that you guys adored the iphone, and that no other phone could beat it?! LOL. These rants didn’t seem to come out back in July.

We hope that the next iphone due in July has these missing features. Apple could be slick and enable them via a 3.0 firmware for the things that are missing software-wise.

My storm is rocking it out, my bold is even better…can’t wait for the new curve to replace both of them.

This list clearly shows/proves that the iphone is NOT a smartphone. It has sold so many because it is attractive to the masses (think RAZR). Corp. America and those business centric users need more.

I have a Tilt (with custom ROM) so I’m only going on experience from my 1st gen Touch.

Hopefully the next iPhone will have all of these things!

It’s capitalism at its finest. Why should they fix those problems when the phone is selling like gangbusters. Apple will just keep devoting their resources to other projects until those issues start resulting in lost income.

Don’t blame Apple, blame the lack of competition from other cell phone makers.

Truth is I have an iphone coming from Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm and I love the iphone. However its losing its luster. Windows mobile for all its problems was at least open to everyone to manipulate and customize. Palm seems to be the next fit for me but we will see. Blackberry bold is amazing but after having so much screen to play with it would be hard for be to go back to a blackberry. ( storm sorry ) Mac made its name for being an alternative to windows and was more friendly compared to the corporate monster which is Microsoft. But things have changed and Apple now seems to be the Monster that no longer listens to its core audience and dismisses peoples opinions. I for one love the fact that we have the option to choose who we want and I plan to replace my iphone this year with something that just makes sense.

No Flash. This should have been #1.

And if you’re going to do a top ten list, please find some way to build to the grand finale instead of starting with #1.

The Letterman people get around this by starting with #10 but putting it on the bottom of the screen. It’s a bit of trickery that gives them both the ‘building to #1′ and ‘ten at the bottom’ features.
