Nintendo Wii and DS break US sales record for 2008

nintendo wii

Despite the slumping economy, Nintendo sold a record setting number of Wii consoles and portable DS systems in the US during 2008. According to NPD Group’s  statistics the Wii dominated the market, selling 10.17 million Wii consoles which accounted for 55% of new console purchases in 2008. Additionally, the four best selling game titles for 2008 were for the Wii console with Wii Play, Mario Kart, Wii Fit and Super Smash Bros beating out the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Gears of War 2 and even Grand Theft Auto IV. Sales of the Nintendo DS were equally brisk with US consumers purchasing 9.95 million units in 2008, an increase of 1.43 million units from 2007. The DS dominated the portable market accounting for 72% of all portable system sales in 2008 and set an industry record by selling 3.04 million units in December alone. With the Wii still flying off the shelves, the DS being the portable system to beat and the DSi expected to hit the US in the spring, Nintendo will continue to be the gaming platform to beat in 2009.

I laugh with you. Why bother ? Get a Mac and run ALL the OS’s in the world. Even Windows 7, but probably not until 2012.

And out 15,000 apps probably a hundred or so are actually worth the download just like the Palm and WinMo. Just because crap moves fast doesn’t make it smells any better.

Windows in 2009? Wishful thinking. Just like the Mac taking a majority share of the desktop OS market. Somethings will always remain marginal at best. And yes, this also applies to Windows.

@ dario9 What you just said seems like an oxymoronice statement. If Windows has the majority share of the OS market whatever Apple releases will get owned by Windows 7, thus it will own ‘09. And not only that, with the praise it has garnered it’s pretty certain that it will do bettr than Vista, which already has about 45% market share I believe. And if it fares as well as analysts have predicted there’s no doubt that MS will make it their flagship for a while until it is widely adopted before releasing a newer OS.

On to Nintendo…the gaming arena is what they were always good at and their innovation has showed us why. I’m glad they’re doing so well. It will be interesting to see how well they fare when the PS3 gets the $100 price cut and the 360 gets the $50 cut in the upcoming months. In a recessive era I believe price is a very big factor in their astounding numbers as the Wii and DS cost less than the competition.

I have never seen a Wii actually in stock at a Target, Wal-Mart or even Fry’s. Why isn’t Nintendo producing more machines to meet the obviously high demand.

Sorry but the Wii stinks. It has a lot of hype and a good marketing scheme. It attracts a large demographic, including a lot of people that wouldn’t normally play games. However, almost everyone I know, ranging from people my age (mid 20s), to kids, to adults 40 and above who have the Wii, all of them stop playing it within a few months because they get over the whole “gimmick”. I haven’t touched mine in about a year now.

The DS on the other hand…that’s pretty killer.
