More major AT&T network woes, when will it stop?

The past month or so have not been kind to AT&T’s wireless networks. Constant and often major network outages have been rolling across the country for the better part of a month now and these mounting issues come on top of ongoing complaints regarding AT&T’s ever-slowing 3G network. Not good. An anonymous tipster brings news of this latest major network issue, affecting Philadelphia and the surrounding area. The symptoms this time around include the inability to hear the party on the other end of the line during outbound and inbound calls. We’re going to go out on a limb here and say it’s pretty important to, you know, hear the person you’re talking to. The good news for those affected: AT&T is well aware of the problem and hopefully it will be resolved in a timely manner. Hit the jump for the full AT&T ticket.

I haven’t really had any problems with my Bold. I live in SoCal, but in the San Gabriel Valley, not on the coast, where all the problems seem to crap up.

    @ ndcart

No offense, but that’s not really saying much, lol. WinMo is a DECENT OS at best. But glad you’re enjoying the iPhone.

Im in the Filthadelphia region and have no problems at all. And no matter what, I can still take my sim out and use another phone. I’ll take that any day along with non crippled phones over the supposed “Network” any day!

I was having issues this morning in Philadelphia, but only with my Motorola Q9h, not my BB Pearl. The former, of course, is 3G.

I’m torn about jumping ship to Verizon because I dislike their phone selection and how they cripple them. I’m also interested in the Pre, but don’t know what Sprint’s network is like these days.

When people are paying anywhere from $60 to $300 per bill it is simply inexcusable for service to go out ON ANY LEVEL!

Customers who are sitting there defending this service by saying that their saving grace is to use wi-fi or flip a switch to turn off broadbrand are possibly the most frustrating elment of this whole debacle because they should be holding this company accountable not trying to justify its poor performance. If I were their customer I would be on the phone (assuming the network is up) demanding compensation of some sort cuz this is crap.

That’s not a fair comparison. TMo’s cells use a proxy service for WAP browsing which is always very quick because it strips down how much it renders a page and simply because it is only WAP vs a full html browser, such as on an iPhone or WinMo. It may not matter to you one way or the other, it’s just not an apples-to-apples comparison, that’s all.

For everyone that continues to say that Verizon “cripples” there phones. Not sure if you have heard but they are unlocking the GPS function on their smartphones so you are able to use another service (I actually saw telnav available as an add on service last night when activating a phone for a customer on a BB Curve)The new smartphones (Omnia, Saga, and Touch Pro) all have Wi-fi. What else do you want?

    @Kevin (R)

I live in S NJ/work in NE PHL and carry a Sprint Q9 and an N95 on ATTM prepaid. Sprint is rock-solid in the DelVal and up and down the East Coast, not like ATTM. I’m no Sprint fanboy but I think you’d be happy with their service in our area.

Same problem here. I’m so sick of At&t, I pay almost 100 bucks a month for crappy service. I’ll be switching to Sprint when the pre comes out.

Here in the Inland Empire area of Southern California, near Riverside, all AT&T customers have been without service since 7:30am today! Rats. I hear someone cut through some fiber.

Come on AT&T, get us back online asap! The repair rep promises that the repair crews are working all weekend until it’s fixed. Well, I’m glad they didn’t take the 3-day weekend off!

3G worked fine on my iPhone in Baltimore.

My buddy that’s an AT&T employee told me that it has to do with the link to the PSTN being overloaded.

Speaking of Verizon outages, we had a huge one here in Maryland last week. A contractor cut a Fiber-optic line, and FiOS service was down for me for about 6 hours. Then the next day their entire EV-DO was out for about 2 hours. No one with Verizon at my office could get an EV-DO signal.

I have been using AT&T since 2001 and I haven’t had any major problems. I’ve had a few dropped calls through out the years, but that is normal for any company. I’ve traveled up north on a road trip and I had signal at all times. I currently have the Bold and it is my first 3G phone, not a single problem yet, maybe it’s because I live in Miami, FL.

The phone is awesome by the way.

The grass is always greener, every wireless carrier suck, IMO AT&T sucks less than any other carrier I’ve tried or have done side by side comparisons on. That being said, you should always pick a carrier based on where you live and your personal experience since for every good area a carrier has a weak area somewhere else.

One thing I can do with my bold that no VZ customer can is sit in an hour and a half traffic jam one the phone, while I get emails at the same time, voice AND data, once you have them, it’s hard to give up. Imagine having to hang up just to have your emails come in?

ATT service and 3G is HORRIBLE!!! No wonder they try so hard to get all the Exclusive phones since they want you to forget about their MOst Terrible Network out of ANYbody.

Verizon and T-Mobile’s 3G networks are SOoooo MUCH Faster and More REliable than ATT.

Of course this is nothing new.

If they hadn’t gotten the iPhone they would not be in business today.

I am in Los Angeles and have had horrible service all day long on my Bold (not that this is the only day, but today has been a banner crap day for AT&T here). Dropped calls and service going completely out intermittently have been the name of the game today. I too, am getting tired about paying through the nose for sub-standard service and equally sub-standard customer service – I agree with a former poster when I say I am jumping ship and going back to Sprint when the Pre comes out.

AT&T has the best data service period at least out West where I live. I’ve simultaneously tested data speeds with sprint, verizon, and AT&T. AT&T is almost always faster. Sprint does have 3G in more places. Verizon and T-Moblie have the least dropped calls. While AT&T seems to have the most dropped calls. I can tell you on thing – AT&T has more bars and better data connectivity in more places. I can get email and surf the web in more places in rural areas with AT&T than any other carrier. Sometimes its just Edge or even GPRS but at least I’m connected.

Also, CDMA that sprint and verizon use sucks. You cannot surf and get emails while on the phone.

Ahh I knew as soon as someone mentioned Sprint that backbeat would be here to complain. You realize mentioning your preferred carrier makes you a shill and a bitchboy, right?

    Also, GetOverIt Said:

“For everyone that continues to say that Verizon “cripples” there phones. Not sure if you have heard but they are unlocking the GPS function on their smartphones so you are able to use another service… What else do you want?”

The problem is that other carriers with the same devices have *always* let you use your GPS unfettered. They offer you a software package that you can pay for but you don’t need to pay more just to use the GPS with other software. This was entirely so they could figure out a way to nickel and dime you even more than their data plans already do. Also, their Touch Diamonds have slower CPUs and half the RAM of other CDMA versions.

Verizon does have a pretty good network but those little things combined with their data prices have kept me away. At least I can roam for free on their towers if I have to.
