Snow Leopard may include tweaked UI codenamed ‘Marble’

As Mac users sit patiently, for the most part, awaiting the arrival of Apple’s 10.6 OS X update, ongoing rumors of a revamped UI are starting to gain a bit more ground. Dubbed Snow Leopard, version 10.6 of OS X was previewed at WWDC 2008 quite a while ago by Apple and it is scheduled to become available sometime this quarter. Rumors originating on Daring Fireball with regards to a tweaked UI had lost steam for a while but sources close to MacRumors now claim the rumor was pretty spot on. The new UI will supposedly be more consistent across applications and will have a darker, flattened look compared to the current OS X theme, Aqua. The overall look, illustrated by the mockup above, will be more in line with the current schemes seen in iTunes and iPhoto. What do you guys think – yea or nay on the rumored theme tweaks?

Nay! Aqua is great and is what makes OS X what it is. Why change it if it ain’t broke?

It’s about time. That bulbous gel look Apple has been using for the last 10 years looks pitiful and took up way too much space on the desktop.

I prefer the Adobe Creative Suite minimalism approach to UI design. Now if Apple would just start using opaque backdrops as well, everything would be groovy.

A little more consistency and a little more polish won’t hurt OSX, particularly as they try to push into enterprises.

Agreed! The gel look is so very tired. Drives me crazy. While they’re at lets dial down the parody of a good drop shadow on the active window.

nay! i LOVE aqua…I’m sure apple since they “believe in choice” as said by steve jobs will at least keep offering aqua as a theme for their snow leopard release

Hahaha, Apple? Believes in choice? What world do you live in? We are talking about the same company that, for the most part, locks their OS to their hardware which is offered in one or two color choice, and features no naitive theme support (iPhone, iPod, Mac – you’re meant to keep them stock) right? If they change the UI you’ll be stuck with it.

HAHA! You’ve got a pretty good point, Ben. I like the new one though.

The ‘Macs suck’ guy was funny too. I love the people that come on Apple related articles to start fights.

I don’t like that look but I agree it needs a revamp. Looks like they are biting vista style now WTF. But that does make me realize it’s been a long time since I’ve ran shapeshifter or candybar on my mac. Time for a change here aswell.

Maybe they will keep the old Aqua interface (which is still pleasant to look at) and have the new one, and then you can simple switch between the two whenever you want, that way, just like at Burger King, you can have it YOUR way…..

I change the look of my Linux desktop every week and the thing about dark themes is when you are surfing the bright white pages give you eyestrain.

You can hack this with Stylish or Greesemonkey but then you never see pages as the designer intended.

I do like dark themes at night though.

I think it is hilarious when people come on to talk trash about Macs. They are obviously uneducated about the hardware as well as the software, and are subconsciously envious of us.

On another note, I’m ready to see Snow Leopard. I’m curious to see what new innovations Apple has come up with!

Has anyone else noticed that in Safari 4, in the webclip section the ‘cancel’ and ‘add’ buttons have changed from aqua to something else.
