iPhone Dev team hints at iPod Touch 2G jailbreak

redsnow

Owners of the latest and greatest iPod Touch may want to take notice of a new post over at the iPhone Dev team blog. A cryptic message hints at a possible 2G iPod Touch jailbreak:

Well it isn’t a British Thermonuclear Device.
It isn’t an episode from “The Twilight Zone”
And it certainly isn’t iPhone 3G related (right now)
There is one other device…
It fits in your pocket..
What can it be?

A link in the post directs you to a webpage for new project, redsn0w, which apparently contains an image of the iPod Touch 2G processor in the center of the star and shows a young girl playing Tic Tac Toe with her dog. Keep your eyes peeled for a big announcement coming next Sunday.

UPDATE: Ready for the decryption? The hash in the upper left corner is of a decrypted 2.1.1 iboot, and the “thing in the circle” is part of the iPod Touch 2nd generation processor.

Just a note…the picture of the young girl playing with her ‘dog’ is actually the BBC test card, and the dog is a toy clown.

    Brent says:

The little girl is “Carole Hersee, playing noughts and crosses with a clown doll, Bubbles the Clown.”

She was featured on the BBC Test Card F back in the day when networks still did that kind of thing.

So, two references to British culture?

What is more interesting than a jailbreak for the iPod 2G, is the following comment by one of the admins in the comments:

“He he, whatever we do, someone complains. You can’t win them all. BTW, the current iPod touch 2G stuff is only one part of our secret project, but ssssh, don’t tell anyone.”

I wonder what the other parts of the secret project are (given that MuscleNerd has also stated that the exploit with a little massaging is reusable (for the 3G))?

just to note, the hash in the upper right left hand corner is of a decrypted iboot, which could only be attained if you had access to the aes engine, which could only be attained if you were running unsigned code at bootloader level :)

does this mean if you currently have a iPod Touch 1G, it’ll be possible to “upgrade” to 2G?

Jordan, no, if you have an iPod Touch 1G or 2G depends on your hardware.. they modified the later iPod Touch’es, therefore it’s a second generation

I bought my iPod Touch about in December ‘07. Is there anyway to modify it to 2G?

    Jkuhn says:

no because the only differences are in hardware and size, not to mention the 2G uses a different processor from the 1G

I think the test card is kinda meant to say “bear with us, were testing things out still, but the show will commence shortly”

I’m curious as to what this means exactly .

Even though I have to have the iPod Touch 2G in my hands … yet .

Hope the hoopla is worthwhile .

As it’s the BBC TV test card, isn’t it hinting this is something to do with watching TV on a 2G ipod, especially as Apple has Apple TV?

I know I’d like to watch TV using Wi-Fi on my ipod, like with a sling player. It may even make me buy Apple TV.
