Telstra exec touts Pre killer coming in Q2

We literally can’t tell you how exciting this is for us. For about a year and a half now, we have dreamed of a day when a new touchscreen handset could find its way to market without being called a possible “iPhone killer”. Seriously, does the inclusion of the word “iPhone” really help SEO that much? Well today is the dawn of a new era people, and this exciting movement of change is being spearheaded by a saucy Telstra executive. In a report from earlier this morning, said Telstra boss supposedly examined Palm’s upcoming Pre handset at CES and compared it to an Android-powered device from HTC that will be making its way to Telstra in Q2:

We have seen both and we believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Pre which at this stage looks nice but is still not delivered to market.

Woo! Sure, he still mentioned the iPhone in that statement but could the Pre be the next must-kill handset? Could this be the start of an iPhone killer-free blogosphere? Yeah, it’s probably just wishful thinking but you can’t fault us for being hopeful. Whatever the case may be, we’re definitely looking forward to learning more about this upcoming HTC handset complete with an HTC-tweaked Android OS — a TouchFLO port perhaps?

that’s exactly what I was thinking lol. Like does each new great phone have to kill the last one before it? What is the Highlander?

HAHA, in making a point about not mentioning the iPhone… Making fun of those who use iPhone for search engine optimization… you mentioned iPhone 4 times (including the quote)! haha. Not to be outdone… iPhone iPhone iPhone!

how can you kill something that has been delivered to the market?
also, every company that called it’s product an “iPhone killer” has failed to “kill” the iPhone.

Palm has done it right, but making no mention of the iPhone in any way.

Take this with a grain of salt if you have heard anything else from Telstra execs in the past.

That looks like the Touch HD, if that comes out with Android in North America you probably can count on Sprint getting it

From what I have been reading around on the internet, people who have used Telstra in AUS arent believing what is being said by this guy. I guess they have high expectations a lot and low outcomes…lol. The Pre does look like a beast though!

“Could this be the start of an iPhone killer-free blogosphere?”
Uh, Zach, you guys ARE the blogoshpere. If you want an iPhone Killer-free blogosphere, all that needs to happen is for you guys (and Engadget and Gizmodo) to stop writing things like “New Nokia ABC – an iPhone Killer?” about every new smartphone being released.

From what I can see, the Pre reminds of a great restaurant, with great food but unfortunately it has a terrible business plan and will be 3 years late to the party. No matter how great the OS is, you’ve got some BIG obstacles:

    1. Developers, do devs even know Palm exists anymore?
    2. Sprint? Sprint!?? Sprint!!!!????
    3. Sprint & Palm are two companies in very crappy financial positions right now. They can’t afford to subsidize the the Pre for 2 to 3 years. (Apple, Microsoft and Goggle on the other hand, have billions to play with.)
    4. They better price that thing competitively with the iphone and blackberrys, etc. in this market. Rumors have it that the Palm CEO said there was no need to price the Pre below iPhone.
    5. Still very, very sketchy on the corporate execution, developer program, app store, desktop sync, document support, etc., etc.
    6. Remember BeOS and Folio? Right, neither does anyone else. Palm doesn’t exactly have a sterling reputation for executing products.
    7. Six months till delivery? SIX frickin’ months? By that time, Android, iPhone, RIM and maybe even MS will have many more goodies ready to rock. That’s an eternity.

Can someone PLEASE get us outtakes of those Dan Hesse Sprint commercials. I mean, the dude has had to like trip a couple times while walking forward, drop the phone as he pulls it out his pocket, spit on himself as he says “Sprint” in the cold for the thousandth time, etc…

Seriously, there’s gotta be an outtake of Hesse screwing up his narrative just as he’s finishing up after a 10-hr shoot, pausing to view a stock quote as Sprint’s bottoms out and then just losing it. He goes from stomping his feet like a petulant kid, to breaking down in tears like Jesse from Saved by the Bell after divulging her addiction to caffeine pills.

Why all the Sprint hate? I never understood why some people just love to root for the big guys and shit on the struggling. Do you all really want to have to choose between a crappy network that bent over for the Bush admin when they saked them to secretly (illegally) wiretap all traffic going through their switches and a network that cripples and rebrands perfectly decent handsets while they figure out a way to charge for capabilities already in the hardware? I seriously wonder what kind of loser roots for the big guy while kicking the little guy while he’s down.

You still didn’t answer my question. It’s not uncommon for people on tech forums to talk about why they chose the services they do but for some reason you have like an irrational hatred of that company. Did Hesse rape your mom or something? self-serving? How so? I use their service and like paying half of what VZW or ATT would charge me for unlimited 3g. Like most people on tech blogs I enjoy talking about the things I like to use and why I like them. Some people seem to have nothing but negative opinions and trash talk to offer. In my opinion, that is the only example of spinelessness I can see. I hardly see how it is “propaganda” to discuss the merits and detriments of different devices and services.

Maybe you could enlighten us as to what amazing choices you have made in the realm of personal electronics so that we could compare our experiences rather than just name calling and whining about other people’s preferences.

    Yin. Meet Yang.

Your [or others'] irrationalism is met in-kind. Cause & Effect is the issue, not your porely considered premise. Removing the cause of a disease always provides a better outcome than its treatment. Simply stop and encourage others to follow suit. Simple, no?

    Sad, but true. ;)

    @ neodorian

I live in NE Ohio and had Sprint. The service sucked balls. I’ve had VZW and Alltel in the past and never had the problems I had dropping calls with Sprint. I jumped ship years ago and started using BlackBerry devices on AT&T and switched in July to the iPhone3G. I don’t drop 1/100th the calls I did on Sprint. My personal experience, you could offer me a Pre with free service and I would pass.

That being said, I have had the most wonderful experience with sprint in Brooklyn, NY. Sometimes, it’s all about location.
