Telstra exec touts Pre killer coming in Q2
We literally can’t tell you how exciting this is for us. For about a year and a half now, we have dreamed of a day when a new touchscreen handset could find its way to market without being called a possible “iPhone killer”. Seriously, does the inclusion of the word “iPhone” really help SEO that much? Well today is the dawn of a new era people, and this exciting movement of change is being spearheaded by a saucy Telstra executive. In a report from earlier this morning, said Telstra boss supposedly examined Palm’s upcoming Pre handset at CES and compared it to an Android-powered device from HTC that will be making its way to Telstra in Q2:
We have seen both and we believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Pre which at this stage looks nice but is still not delivered to market.
Woo! Sure, he still mentioned the iPhone in that statement but could the Pre be the next must-kill handset? Could this be the start of an iPhone killer-free blogosphere? Yeah, it’s probably just wishful thinking but you can’t fault us for being hopeful. Whatever the case may be, we’re definitely looking forward to learning more about this upcoming HTC handset complete with an HTC-tweaked Android OS — a TouchFLO port perhaps?

Telstra are a bunch of morons if they ditch the webOS-powered devices in favour of those running Android…
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a BIG Open Source supporter and I sincerely believe that Android has a LOT of potential…
And whilst it may give the commercial smartphone operating systems (including Android) a run for their money, I don’t think’s it’s ready yet… I consider its current state to be a large-scale, public beta.
It’s simply too early to be putting all one’s eggs in the same basket as an unproven smartphone operating system.
Palm was once the king of the PDA world, their previous operating system is still renowned for it’s speed, security and reliability… Even their cheapest devices are made to a VERY high manufacturing standard!
Palm is a proven platform with a large, loyal fanbase and deliberately excluding it like this is nothing more than a major telco force-feeding its customers the product of THEIR choosing!
As a large Telstra corporate customer, I sincerely hope that Telstra change their mind about releasing a webOS-powered device or I might just have to look elsewhere…
Um, why was BeOS mentioned as one of Palm’s failures?
BeOS is an Open Source operating system that has nothing to do with Palm, and failed long ago for reasons that do not relate to Palm in the slightest…
As for the Folio, that WAS a failure, but bear in mind that the Folio was the first time Palm ever had a major flop… Unfortunately for them, certain people at Palm had too much confidence in the Folio, making its failure appear so much bigger than it was and ensuring that pretty much the entire world knew about it!
^Maybe because BeOS was extremely promising _before_ Rosey Palm got its mits on it. Palm acquired it in order to kill BeOS. Simple as that.
Idiot.
Sprint has been the most enlightened carrier about charging a reasonable price for unlimited data, which is important to people like me who do a lot with “push” corporate email, calendar, contacts, and attachments. I’ve had Verizon and it has very good coverage around the country; I would go back to it if the need presented itself. Sprint was spotty the first time I had it 12 years ago, but for the last three years has been quite good both locally and on trips in North America. The Pre announcement was timely enough to keep me from jumping right now from both Palm and potentially Sprint.
