Palm Centro 2 to follow shortly after Pre release?

While the timing of this latest Palm rumor is likely way off if the company’s history is to be considered, the subject matter seems fairly obvious: A WebOS-powered Centro-alike is in the works. Citing “a seemingly reliable firsthand source,” Palm Infocenter states that Palm will deliver a Centro 2 in Fall 2009. The handset will maintain much of the current Centro’s styling and will also be headed to Sprint. While it is very difficult if not impossible to imagine Palm releasing two new handsets so closely to each other, could this be part of Palm’s new strategy as it positions itself for a comeback? Yeah, we think not. There is no doubt that Palm will eventually issue a new handset powered by WebOS that uses a form factor similar to the Centro, but it is most definitely not going to hit the market a few short months after the Pre is released. A move like that would be ridiculously cannibalistic and Palm has shown us that it means business this time around. Besides, Palm will already be plenty busy dropping GSM Pre models around the world this coming Fall, leaving precious few resources to be allotted to a new Sprint handset launch.

Other rumors that have surfaced in the past few days indicate that the next Palm handset to sport WebOS will be a touchscreen-only candybar. Really? After all the little digs Palm reps gave the iPhone during CES? Just to be safe, maybe someone should start a rumor that Palm’s second WebOS-powered handset will be a clam shell so all the bases are covered…

A “smartphone” was once officially defined as a telecommunications device with advanced PIM (personal information management) functionality, however as this technically covers virtually all cellphones there days (and even many other devices), the definition is largely up for speculation…

Personally, I consider a “smartphone” to be a telecommunications device with computer-like and corporate functionality – whilst such a definition would technically include Apple’s iPhone range, I believe they deserve their own category as a portable multimedia device (along with the Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable) and certain other cellphones) because multimedia is their primary focus, not “computer-like” and “corporate” functionality…

Anyway, getting back on-topic, are you all forgetting that Palm have officially stated more than once that the Centro range will continue to run Palm OS for the moment?

Palm have stated that they will have the Palm OS-powered Centro range for the lower-end of the market, the Microsoft Windows Mobile-powered devices for the corporate segment and the webOS-powered devices for in-between…

I disagree with this because I think it’s just too confusing for the average consumer, but it’s what Palm have announced, so don’t hold you breath.

That would be confusing, the Centro 2 has a built in fan base to keep it going

By trying to straddle the position between Professional-grade and Consumer-entertainment from the absolute weakest of market positions and with the absolute weakest carrier-position, Rosey Palm will lose both positions in the onslaught of current and forthcoming competition. :)

Unless Palm believes Elevation will poor in another $100M to support a micro-niche between the Professional-grade and Consumer-entertainment segments, Palm loses both. Palm’s fanbois, such as yourself, bitchboy, are not enough to sustain that micro-niche. You have to _CONVERT_ current users of iPhone, WinMo, and Blackberry for Elevation’s second $100M round of funding to have a payday.

    Good luck with that. :)

Thanks again for telling us the future because we all know you especially and every other prognosticator are never wrong and what you say is law. Let me tell everyone out there now that there is no need to buy any Palm device or subscribe to Sprint because backdoor says so, anybody doing differently is a bitchperson or a shill.

    A “bitchperson”? _STILL_ LMGDAO @ U, idiot.

Some of us aren’t kids and have seen this movie before. Business can only operate in so many directions and companies like Sprint and Palm have placed themselves into very narrowly defined pigeonholes. Don’t blame me because I agree with the analysts who see both companies for what and where they are.

You’re married to your carrier and that’s the difference between us. I’m not married to the several carriers we use because I and my companies have differing needs and different carriers provide have strengths and weaknesses. Sprint for the nationwide voice and data needs we have is out of the question. Having a generic 10% speed differential between Sprint and any other carrier means nothing where you cannot get a signal. :)

There is no universal Jesus-carrier as you always describe, bitchboy. That’s the fact, Jack-off. ;)
