No new Xbox Console in Microsoft’s future

For those of you that have been sitting at home, pining away for a shiny new Xbox-branded console to replace your ailing 360, you might want to consider taking up a new hobby. Robbie Bach, president of MS’ entertainment division, revealed that the company has decided to focus its efforts on continuing development of the existing generation console for the foreseeable future. According to the company, research has proven that fewer gamers are in the market to upgrade their existing system these days, likely due at least in part to the ailing economy. As such, the company is planning on concentrating its efforts of exploiting the Xbox 360 to its full potential, with plans for new features and further game development. This isn’t terribly surprising, but it’s still a bit disappointing given the relative ago of the Xbox 360, which went into production in 2005…almost 4 years ago. Now that Microsoft has shown its cards, what new features would you most like to see the company work on integrating into the 360?

Of course Microsoft is keeping the 360 around for a while.. Because the only other option they have is come out with a new system that has the same features and specs as the PS3, but then they would have to price them as high or higher than the PS3. If they release a new console not only will they be competing with PS3 and Wii but they’ll be competing against the 360 as well… wich would equal not many sells..

The ps3 is about to be gaining some serious momentum IMO.. I believe the 360 was only designed to be a 4 year console whereas the PS3 was designed to be around for awhile (not sure if it’ll be 10 years).. but like many have written, the ps3’s potential is yet to be revealed, but i’m pretty sure the 360 has already lived up to its… I believe one more price cut and the ps3 sales are going to soar…

XBOX needs blu ray support, probably via an external drive. Wifi support would be nice, but for existing customers, you’d probably have to buy a new unit. So good for new customers, not great for current. Most online/ LIVE features are the same or better than PS3 and PSN, so no need to add, just maintain its solid goodness. Although I would like to see them open up streaming access from Blockbuster Online or Amazon Unbox, or both. Featuring only Netflix is a bit limiting for people who prefer one of the other services.

Despite all of the things Microsoft can do to make the XBOX experience even better, the biggest problem with the XBOX may be the easiest to overlook: you can’t order pizza.

Also, I wouldn’t mind them adding a web browser.

I at one time had a PS3, 360 and Wii and am now down to just the PS3. The Wii got boring and after PS3 started getting good games there was no need for the 360 (glad I sold it too cause it got the red ring of death a few months later.) The PS3 is an excellent Blu-Ray player and upconverts DVDs nicely as well. As far as games, I have no complaints. I’m not a huge online gamer (though Resistance 2 co-op online has been a big part of my life recently) so the fact that I don’t have to pay is nice. As far as exclusive games, I’ve seen MGS, Killzone 2, Resistance 2 and LBP mentioned but don’t forget about Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. I’ve beaten it on every difficulty level and continued to play it even after that and Uncharted 2 will be coming out. Can’t wait.

As far as what the 360 should add without adding much cost…built-in Wi-Fi. Would it actually cost MS $100 to add it, I highly doubt it.

if you are to buy a ps3 now, you are getting the cheapest of the lot for a huge price tag. the one ps3 which was the best they don’t make anymore, which is backward compatible, the current one isn’t. what happen to the large library of ps2 games you would love to play on a hd-tv. ps3 has blue-ray going for it, buts not convincing enough since i can get a blue-ray player under $400, with more features.

xbox360 has a ton of games out and many more on its way. i own a 360 and the only thing i fear is the red ring of death, which every 360 owner fear also. 2009 will be a great year for both consoles, there are a bunch of great games coming out, but the real winner will be exclusives, and who has the better. multi-platform releases will see microsoft winning because they have a larger install base, so more games will be sold for their system.

now sony said the ps3 in a 10 year investment, but for them to really rip the rewards is to kill the ps2 (pardon the term) and keep the exclusives to ps3 only. (don’t release god of war 3 ps2 version.)

Blue Ray is going out as well as ANY type of disc. How about support for SD cards and have the future of Gaming be on that type of media because that is where its actually headed. It’s now cost effeicient, holds as much, and will hold more data.

    some dude says:

How about adding the zune marketplace to xbox? It shares the same gamertag and microsoft points. Might as well share the console, too.

As for the new xbox console that is to be delayed… Thank God! It seems like it was only a year ago that the 360 came out. Time sure does fly. And I really hope that microsoft doesn’t try to pull a nintendo and start targeting 8 year old girls and retired couples. It’s pretty obvious that they are going to try to make something that is better than the wii’s motion based gaming. Look at what sony “came up with all on there own” exactly a year after nintendo had announced at E3 that it would add revolutionary motion sensing to gaming.

But it’s pretty darn obvious that they are going to go down that path. They probably would have done it with the 360 if it weren’t for that fact that they wanted to release it a year before wii and ps3.

I’m hoping for some sick 3-D gaming in the future, myself. But couldn’t they go ahead and do that now?

The people noting how PSN is free and XBL is not, have you actually compared the two? I have all three machines, and to be quite honest, PSN is rubbish. I get disconnected roughly 2 times an hour, and my pings even to local servers are 200+. XBL doesn’t have this problem, pings are always low and the service never disconnects like that. When you think about it, its well worth paying for XBL, as it gives MS the money to maintain it.

yeah but lets think about this for a second: would you rather pay more for a system with better games( 360), or pay less and pay for it by the poor quality of the ps3 games.

    Owen says:

Well first let me say that I agree that no company should make a new console. With the economy the way it is, it would almost kill a company to do that. If any one company wants to do a new system it should be Microsoft to make a portable xbox system. One that can go against Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s new DSi Who wouldn’t like to take the master chief on the go lol. That’s just my personal opinion.

Second, I have read what most people would like in a new redesigned xbox 360 and I think that a internal or even a external blu-ray player would be great. Whether that can be done or not I don’t know but that would be nice. Built in Wifi would be nice too but I doubt they will do that. Also I have seen people saying that u have to buy a xbox360 gaming adapter to play wireless but that’s not true, I have a Belken wireless gaming adapter I use that was like $30-$35 and works perfect for wireless gaming. And I think a Wii like controller for the 360 is a bad idea for so many reasons. A Internet browser would be great also

Third, I have all three of the systems (360, wii, and ps3). Comparing the systems this is what I have to say, The system that has worked the best with no problems is my wii. Im on my 3rd replacement 360 due to the red ring of death and my 2nd ps3 due to the control arm in the blu ray drive broke and killed it. I have all three systems hooked up HD to a 75″ dlp tv and the ps3 and 360 have hdmi hooked up and by far the ps3 looks the best for both games and movies. The few things I like about the 360 is the marketplace and the achievements. Overall I like the ps3 the best. It looks better and plays better than the others and it may not have that many exclusives for the ps3 but the ones it does have blows anything the 360 and wii has and that includes halo and GoW. I dont even see the 360 being able to play MGS4, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, or Resistance. Also Bio Shock, UT3 and COD4 was better on the ps3 my opinion and if halo 3 and GoW were able to be played on ps3 it would kill everything. Also u have the option on some games to play with a keyboard and mouse on the ps3.

All in all if u want a party system to have a big group of friends to play on get a wii. U want to have bragging rights on how good u r and a good price on a system get the 360. If u want a system with great looking movies and games and want to have internet browser and the option to run a different OS on it like Windows XP or Linux and have the money to spend get the ps3. Thats my opinion and im sticking to it.

The main 2 things should be a better overall system (ie. graphics, hardware, better cooling, speed) and Quality of the games, or either lower the prices of new games, since they lack in content and features / abilities. All games, even the best ones, seem half way finished, those extra 3 or 4 things added can make a game.

If MS really wanted to screw with Sony, they would offer a Blu-Ray player add on for less than the difference between the two systems.

Take away their one shining hardware advantage and all you are left with is a smattering of over hyped games that take entirely too long to come out.

they probably wont do it into future console making for *further models* of the xbox 360 because then the people who have older 360’s will complain that they should get blu ray for free

    Hazuki Avenger says:

    360 v PS3 and the future:

One thing I haven’t seen about the
futureproof debate is the Hard drive
    question.

The PS3 may have a smaller hard drive,
but you can swap the drive over with
another laptop drive when the first one
has filled up with games. You can pick up
    a laptop drive 120GB for $80/£50.

Whereas xbox360 requires a cartridge containing
a laptop drive and this will cost you
    $120/£70 for a 60GB drive.

So in terms of futureproof PS3 is the
best cost option as your growing game
collection will soon spill into a
    new hard drive.

    POINT MADE!

I would like to see any game on PS3 that is 10% better than one on xbox 360. IMO Killzone 2 is nowhere near the COD series. Both gameplay and controls are smoother on xbox. I have both consoles. PS3 has been a dissapointment for me.

I have an xbox 360. I would love a ps3 but simply can’t afford it at this current time. I love my xbox 360 don’t get me wrong, the online play is second to none, but I’d happily get the cash if i saw some more progression with the ps3’s blue-ray tech. One of my friends has a ps3 and we have some of the same games on our consoles and I just can’t see enough of a difference to fork out the cash.
If they started using the ps3 to its full potential I’d go buy one as soon as I could, but I just don’t see anything being done that can’t be done on regular xbox disc’s.

Also… I wonder if sony have purposefully held back the ps3 so it doesn’t “peak too soon” so to speak???

I Own both consoles, the PS3, and the Xbox 360. and i have to say that the games for the ps3 are getting better and better, and they are also getting more interactive with the motion sensoring. I used to be an xbox guy but now i think im liking the ps3 more. yeah alot of you are saying that its the same game quality as the xbox, but really its not, the playstation still hasn’t shown what it can really do. the advantages about the ps3 is that you get to play games which are getting better than the xbox, but it’s also including other great benefits that the xbox doesnt have like wifi with an internet browser, free online gaming, and it also has a blu ray player. plus you gotta understand that the japanese are way more advanced in technology than we americans, so who knows what else sony will bring out for the playstation.

ok seriously the wii has the best games, the 360 the best shooters, and ps3 has blu-ray (microsoft owns part of blu-ray, they added the hddvd to win the war either way.) i own all three and they all have their advantages. the ps3 sucks as a game consone, but as a blu-ray with a 40 gb hard drive, i like it.
