Skype now available for Android and 100 Java enabled mobile phones
Skype announced on Thursday the availability of a new Skype Mobile beta that is compatible with Android-powered phones and over 100 Java-enabled phones from LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. The new lite version of Skype includes the following Skype features:
- Make Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world
- Send/receive instant messages to/from individuals or groups
- Make Skype calls at low rates to people on landlines or mobile phones
- Receive calls to your online personal phone number on Skype
- See when your Skype contacts are online/available to chat
The lite version of Skype uses both airtime minutes and cellular data connection to make/receive calls, update contact list, etc. While that might be less than optimal, it is now available worldwide and can be used to make calls to the United States, United Kingdom, Poland, Brazil (Rio and Sao Paolo), Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Australia and New Zealand. Skype users with compatible mobile phones can go to www.skype.com/m using their phone’s mobile browser or www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile from a computer for additional information and download instructions. Is BlackBerry not a Java enabled phone? That would be good news for me.
I am still waiting for the app that will allow video calling from my cell phone (a Nokia N95-3) to someone online like on Skype, GoogleTalk, Msn Messenger, etc. either using 3G or WiFi…is it even possible to do? I don’t see why it wouldn’t be if you can do cell to cell video calling.
no blackberry? that’s shit!
I was hoping they would at least have a version for the Bold. I don’t know why Blackberry is getting no love from Skype.
For BB users, try iskoot. It works very good on my bb curve. You do need wifi to use it.
loaded it onto my ATT V3xx and it works like a charm with the Verisign certificate version!! AWESOME call quality via ATT’s 3g network!
Blackberry has Truphone just like iphone and Nokia
no samsung i8510, crap !!!
Forget iSkoot. Useless POS.
This has to be the saving call for Skype since competitor Rebtel VOIP was probably killing them. Rebtel doesn’t need to run any software for ANY phone!
Just sign up, get some local numbers assigned, and then use it from ANY celphone! No data plan needed! Cheaper than Skype for some international calls too without the per-call connection fee hit.
