Sony’s touchscreen Walkman gets confirmed

sony-walkman-nwx-x1000

As expected, Sony unveiled its rumored iPod Touch competitor and all we can say is wow! The Sony Walkman NWZ-X1000 will feature a colorful and crisp 3-inch OLED display, Wi-Fi and built-in headphone-independent noise cancellation for those who prefer not to shell out a Benjamin for a pair of noise-canceling headphones. We also can’t overlook that marble painted exterior as it is most definitely unique. The new touchscreen NWZ-X1000 will be available in 16GB and 32GB sizes. Further specifics on the player, pricing and availability will have to wait until Sony’s press conference later this evening. Until then, start drooling and pinching those pennies as Sony may actually have a viable iPod competitor on its hands.

    KD, you cannot be serious about this product being a viable iPod competitor. It’s another me too product. With the App store going as strong as it has, nothing will be a viable competitor anytime soon.

    App store? I have no desire to buy a bunch of apps from iTunes. In fact if this thing can keep the prices down and *not* tie it to some proprietary format or store, I would consider it. Otherwise it’s just as bad as Apple. I want to put music from my collection onto an mp3 player and bring it with me when I leave the house. That’s it. None of this app store crap to milk money from me wherever I go.

    This product looks hot no doubt, it being a iPod touch competitor? not a chance i think, why? this is just a MP3 Player which is 5 years to late i think, if sony would have come out with this back in 2004 it would had really made a impact but right now the iPod touch just has to many freggin apps, Why would you buy this when the the touch could do so much

    Dude you don’t really have to buy anything from iTunes most of the Apps are already free, some of them are crap since there’s like over 10000 of them and growing but they do have some really cool & nice ones too, comparing this to a touch is like comparing a really nice basic calculator to a netbook

    With only wifi, even if there is a browser, the Sony is still playing catch-up with the iPod Touch. Now if they threw in FM radio with RDS and recording, Bluetooth wireless that also worked with their sound cancelling, a boatload of great apps/games for free download, etc., they might have something.

    You guys post on these boards as if your opinions matter. They don’t. It’s all about sales, and Apple’s got sales. Sony, for its part, can’t seem to sell anything these days.

    looks good to me with the oled and noise cancelation that will hook some. Give it PSP games and playstation store and if it can run that new firefox mobile browser Fennec or even Opera mobile or sky fire..ipod touch might get bitch slapped a little

    The iPod/iPhone has 14,601 apps with over 4,000 being games. I doubt very much Sony can “touch” Apple’s UI or OS. Sony is 5 years too late to the game. Nobody but a geek would even know what OLED or noise cancellation even is! HAHA

    Here is the thing, Apple knows the Mp3 market will go under one day that’s why they introduce the iPhone & the iPod touch to take over while leaving the entire iPod line alive to just fade out. This thing from Sony is really hot no doubt, it has a really nice screen which Apple & microsoft will adopt in their next product refresh, but that is it? 1st, this thing is not even release yet 2nd, it can’t do anything more than a average Zune that’s already on the market can

    @jman,

    Yea but apple hasn’t gone up yet. They are slowly going up over the past 3 years. But in the big picture they are still a smaller entity.

    Sony is really stepping up the game so this is good news for us consumers as all the other mp3 player makers will also want to keep up with the competition. I admit the ipod touch is nice but it won’t be for long as the competition will keep everyone on their toes (both apple and Sony).

    its a nice player will def keep up all its missing is the appstore but lets be honest who really uses it like 90 percent of the apps are either somthing about finding food, reference info, motion marble games, or a fake mario kart… please tell me whats appstore app doesnt either replace a book mark in your browsfr, reinvent a marble game or reinvent a kart game..

    Sony is not even in this market anymore. Why bother? They should stick to sexy, but ridiculously expensive notebook computers. Oh, and sexy but unaffordable game consoles.

    This market is wrapped up by the iPod Touch; or hey, go a little better and also get a phone (iPhone).

    Sony, go home. It is ironic that they made the case look like granite – this thing will sink like a rock.

    The proper wording would be Zune competitor or iPod alternative but in no way will is this product on par with iPod.
