Nokia pulls plug on N810 WiMAX Edition
In a startlingly abrupt move just one day after the launch of WiMAX service in Portland, OR, Nokia is reportedly discontinuing production of its N810 WiMAX Edition internet tablet and will stop all sales effective immediately. Nokia has yet to announce the move publicly, but a reliable source within Nokia claims the WiMAX-enabled N810 has been pulled from inventory systems and distributor locations with current stock have been instructed to return all units to Nokia. While the source could not attest to Nokia’s motive behind this recall, he speculated that WiMAX switch issues combined with the slow roll out were major factors in the decision. It is currently unclear whether or not Nokia plans to re-release the N810 WiMAX Edition at a later point in time, or if the company has any additional WiMAX-enabled devices in development. Currently, the N810 WiMAX Edition is still available for sale on the Nokia USA site. We have contacted Nokia regarding this matter and will update this post with any official comment from the company.

To be honest, while Nokia Tablets are very nice, the OS in them OS2008 is SHIT! Its the worst version of Linux Ive ever played with.
I would personally hope they pulled this as the OS they have is crap and needed revising before going all balls to the walls on WiMax.

They jumped on Wimax because it’s a great service and it would be good to be established with WiMax devices. It takes a while to roll out a new network like that and it’s a shame these companies are bailing because returns aren’t immediate.

The returns on Wimax are going to non-existent, at least in The States. They’re bailing before they pump too much coin into a technology that’s DOA.
It doesn’t matter how great the technology is, when the players who will actually pump money into it have chosen something else. Like it or not, LTE is going to rule in the US.

Pulling N810 out of the market does not mean that Nokia is pulling out of WiMAX.
That being said, LTE is the way to go, Ericsson and ALU took the lead on that front and Nokia will be forced to follow.

LTE? Not interested. WiMax is way ahead and the last thing we need is ATT grabbing more market share. These networks take years to roll out and build up. It’s sad that these companies pull support when there isn’t an immediate return. People need to hear about the service, get around to trying it, and often times, just be buying a device that happens to feature it. Average people didn’t give two shits about EVDO or HSDPA until they started carrying their WinMo phones and their high end Nokias and iPhones. When there are devices being shipped with WiMax/EVDO radios and decent coverage, people will pay a reasonable price to use it as long as there is not a contract.
Everyone I know who has tested/bought WiMax here in Baltimore has come to that conclusion.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a problem with WiMax, at all. I’d love it if it went live in my area. But, the major players are going LTE. So, most people aren’t going to be interested until those networks go live.

WiMax can’t fly. Let us face it. Sprint made 2 back to back bad choices with Nextel and WiMax. Only reason Nokia agreed to build WiMax N810 was to get some equipment contract from Sprint. Seems like that business didn’t go well as anticipated, and Nokia pulled the plug.

Nextel wasn’t an ideal partner but What’s done is done, abandoning Wi Max before it’s even around would be not so smart. The biggest problem with Wi Max the stoopid agreement with affiliates that allowed them to stop progress
