Apple may make unibody 17″ MacBook Pro

There are just a few days left until Macworld and Apple rumors are certainly not in limited stock. The latest word from the rumor mill is that Apple is going to be announcing the unibody Macbook Pro 17″ we’ve all been waiting for since the refresh of the 15″ version and the 13″ MacBook. It’s pretty obvious that that would have been the next move for Apple in its notebook line, but what’s a little shocking is that the rumor also says the battery will not be user-replaceable. Oy vey. If this is true a lot of people will definitely be upset, especially considering how abysmal the battery performace is in Apple’s latest laptops. When we buy expensive things, we always have longevity in mind – even if we’re the type that constantly buys the latest and greatest. While the rumored internal battery, like the iPod or iPhone, is said to be more powerful than previous MacBooks, there is still no excuse for it. What if there is some sort of failure? Do you have to go out of your way to have your lappy repaired at an Apple Store or go through the inconvenience of sending your computer in? Let’s hope that part of the rumor stays a rumor and that Apple doesn’t disappoint in this department.

    See the funny thing about gadget blogs is that they exist precisely because what the mainstream likes (the mainstream is the corporate target, not most of you message board ‘tards) isn’t generally what the tech geeks like. So, following that, since tech geeks would seem to be opposed to a non user-replaceable battery, and since the mainstream generally differs from most of you, I’d say prepare yourself for a non user-replaceable battery. Don’t like it? Don’t buy it. But save the complaining. Seriously. It’s gotten way old.

    Although their forthcoming oft-regurgitated screeds blasting the deadly sin of a non-user-replaceable battery lack merit, isn’t it curious how they have no objective basis [performance-based emperical evidence] to justify their hypocritical blasts where this article is concerned? Thin-skinned non-thinkers are a dime-a-million. ;)

    If this rumor is true, I suppose it just means the MacBook Pro will become even less “Pro”…

    Why do people complain about something such as a non user-replaceable battery when they never had any intentions (or funds) of purchasing it to begin with?

    Well the Macbook Pro already gives users 5 hour of battery live so the next model should give you 10+ hours since is gonna be a silver-zinc battery, i could care less if it’s user replaceable or not, Why? cause my machine is gonna be under warranty for 2 years, Now if your getting a HP or Dell with a battery life or 2 hour or less a removable battery is a must

    Inspiron 1720, which BTW beats Apple on any performance test while costing less than a half of Apple, lasts 4.5-5 hours in classrooms. No Apple ever passed 3.5 hour mark as of yet.

    @MiniMe, You must be joking lol, your saying you got 4 1/2 to 5 hour on a inspirion 1720 that comes with a 6 cell battery lol, ok Dude but only cause you say so, not to mention the 1720 comes with a super slow bus speed, super slow 802.11b, 802.11g that has to be about 4 years old, super slow SDDR2 Ram running at 667Mhz, No LED backlight screen, and you wanna Compare it to a Apple product? Please! maybe to the old G4 the where discontinue a few years ago. My macbook has to be about 2 1/2 years old and i still get 4 hour of battery life but when i first got it i use to get 5+ hours, it’s not like i never had a dell before and never experience their rude as hell tech support from india that would try to trick you in every way to void your warranty, i been there.

    Dude you can build an HP for 1,400 with the exact same specs as the new 15 inch macbook pro, which is 2499. An 1100 Apple premium? HA!

    Ya but 1400$ and its still not a Mac though… Are you disregarding the fact that there are those out there in favor of Mac 0S… Maybe for you it is a better bargain to go with an hp, but in my opinion apple makes a clean product, and it is nowhere near in comparison to an hp or anything else of that nature..

    The bloom will soon be off the Apple rose unless they stop with the 50-60% premiums they charge for their machines. I love Apple’s products and wanted to get a new laptop but not for 2 g’s.

    @keymaker,

    Apparently, you didn’t do your homework. 9-cell battery and N-wireless. It might have slow bus, but when it comes to processing, it blows Apple out of the water – rendering that takes 40 minutes on it, runs for 50 to an hour on a newer MacBook Pro (6 months newer). Sure it doesn’t have LED, but given that it lasts 5 hours vs. 3.5 for MacBook I don’t really mind. And at $1500 less, with better videocard and faster processing I don’t even mind the fact that it is not Apple “cool”.

    chris says:

    The original battery on my macbook pro was defective and had to be replaced w/in the first year. I’m lucky enough to live w/in 5 mins of an apple store now, and they replaced it on the spot. However I used to live 3 hours from the nearest apple store and that would have been a pain to deal with. However there are no Dell stores, or any other type of store for that matter that can replace your defective battery on the spot.

    So if you live near an apple store why would you care? You’re going to take it there anyway to get another battery even if it’s user-replaceable. Hopefully apple has a fast shipping program for other people.
