Yellowsn0w you won’t mind eating

Done and done. As promised, the Dev-Team has delivered yet again and released the first version of its iPhone 3G soft-unlock to the world. It’s not without a few hiccups but it definitely works and it works well. What’s more, yellowsn0w works with the current baseband which means you won’t have to worry about downgrading or any other such nonsense. Getting yellowsn0w is as simple as can be – just add a new repo to Cydia or Installer and you’re off to the races. For those continuously commenting about the iPhone 3G unlock being useless, please. How about using the iPhone on T-Mobile with EDGE? Most T-Mobile handsets are still without 3G anyway and the iPhone is a device unlike anything currently available from the carrier. We’re not saying it’s better or worse, but it is different and choices are what it’s all about. How about using a local pre-paid SIM while traveling? Nothing like being able to keep your handset along with all of your data while traveling abroad – without having to worry about being bent over by international roaming charges. There are plenty more reasons as well but we won’t bore you with more ranting. Hit the via link for the Dev-Team’s blog post and the read link to get unlocking.

    hi. just to let you know, that picture is actually using a different exploit than the one yellowsn0w uses. see, they found smth in the 2.2 baseband that they could use and instead opted to do that instead of the exploit that they had for all other bbs but got fixed in 2.2. i guess they found it quite recently, because the demo that MuscleNerd gave was using the old exploit. anyway, cool stuff.

    peace out

    @phlaymz
    why do you need to unlock a touch? its not like you can put a sim card in a make phone calls. its called jailbraking, and yes, its been done, what rock have you been hiding under?

    @JakeyBoy: no dude. the iPod Touch 2G has a completely new processor. they fixed the bootrom exploit that Pwnage2 relies on to jailbreak the phone. now, it has a new gid key, new processor, and the classic “Pwnage” (bootrom does not sigcheck stuff in NOR) exploit is closed. at every boot, the bootrom now signature checks the low level bootloader before it jumps to it, so now it is much harder to get a jailbreak. even if a method was found to write to NOR unsigned, which is what the first to Pwnage’s did, the iPod Touch would fail to boot because the bootrom integrity check would fail.

    kthx.

    Most people trying yellowsn0w are not getting an success. This is still VERY beta and those relying on proxy solutions to have a working phone should hold off before trying it. Once the baseband is upgraded, it can’t be downgraded and you may end up with an iPod touch for a while. Wait til all the bugs are worked out.

    I’ve been trying all day to get it to work. Got it to work briefly but nothing permanent. I’m sure they’ll release a stable version soon. The link that you have to the yellowsn0w.net website = it’s actually not a site run by the iPhone Dev team. I’m pretty sure at least.

    Zach Epstein says:

    Paul – Yes, you just need to initiate recovery mode, connect to iTunes and then flash it with standard Apple firmware.

    Hey BGR, you are linking to the scammer site that Dev team wants everyone away from. In their previous post they say they have no affiliation with yellowsn0w.net. This is some guy trying to make a buck off ad revenue.

    You should be linking to the blog. blog.iphone-dev.org.

    From their twitter page “OK, time to “down tools” – the yellowsn0w twitter followers have not gone down. grrrr! spammers and as I said we don’t have a “.net” domain” 12:43 PM Dec 31st, 2008 from web

    Common BGR, do the right thing.
