30GB Zunes dying en masse across the globe

We haven’t the slightest clue as to why this is happening so please bear with us, but owners of Microsoft Zunes with 30GB hard-drives have been reporting that their devices have inexplicably malfunctioned and refuse to boot up. Seriously. Reports are flooding in from all over the world and the same sad story is being repeated over, and over, and over again. People are waking up and have been attempting to power on their Zunes for a morning commute or just for some morning tunes, only to find that they are holding nothing more than an expensive brick that freezes on the Zune boot-up screen. The problem is so widespread that all of the Zune forums (yes, apparently there are more than one) are buzzing with people swapping stories about their “Z2K” experiences. We’ll be sure to update you as soon as we hear something from Microsoft, but so far it looks like no one has successfully brought a 30 back from the dead.

Actually many people have brought there’s back from the dead. I’ve managed to find that out in less than five minutes.

You need to do a hard resest, because it was a leap year, the zune can’t handle day 366. Tomorrow it’ll probably boot up just find, and MS will issue a firmware update to fix the issue.

A hard reset will also reset the date, so just dont sync it until tomorrow and it’ll be fine.

    (1) The Zune has to know the date?

    and

    (2) The Zune can’t handle Leap Year!!?

@bob: Yeah but the “hard reset” is a bit more then your normal hard reset. You’re actually in there prying things apart and pulling wires off so a lot are waiting for a software fix.

Plus I was hearing that a lot of people were having problems even after that but it could be because they were trying to sync again, which makes sense.

I’d hardly call messages from all of the 57 Zune owners worldwide “flooding in” but okay. ;) (I’m kidding, I’m kidding, don’t flame me)

    Mine committed Zuneicide this morning.

It’s a damn shame. I like my Zune way better than my iPod. I guess I may have to dust off that old 5G.

Bob . . . Is English your native language? If so, you might want to get a lawyer and sue your school district for all they’re worth.

    “there’s” ≠ “theirs”
    “find ≠ “fine”
    “dont” ≠ “don’t”

But what more is to be expected from a Zune owner?

Gauntlet Down: Your iPod has to know the date too; how else do you think you’re going to find out the date you last played something?

what bob said works money. remove the little plastic piece around the bottom cable connector, then remove the two small screws, then try to fit your fingernails in between the two halves of the zune case and pry apart (start on the lower half and work your way up. disconnect the battery cable, wait about a minute, reconnect. Back in business. DO NOT SYNC until tomorrow.

I dont know why everyone is giving the Zune such a hard time. i personally own a Zune right now and i’ve owned an iPod in the past.
To be honest i think the Zune compared to the iPod classic is far superior. I found finding album information, podcasts, and new music alot more convenient on the Zune. As well the Zune 3.0 software is great! alot better than the boring iTunes layout, There are some features missing but they are things i can live without.
In regards to this Zuneicide or Y2K9, THE ZUNE 30GB IS 3 YEARS OLD, its an old product there are bound to be some issues. Its the same as bad mouthing an Ipod Photo or a G5 iPod.

Poor little Zune owners, they all they wanted was to be welcomed to the social, now it’s a Zunesday disaster. I guess Zunes will not be playing the tunes for the New Year’s Party tonight.

I wonder if Microsoft can fix these better that the Red Ring of Death on the Xbox 360?

    @ Like-To-Spin (AKA KWALDO):

What is the Zune going to teach the iPod next? It certainly do not want any of my iPods to do this new trick? None of that terrible music you like will be coming from your Zune polluting the neighborhood for tonight’s hoedown. The neighbors will be happy I guess. HAHAHA

Think it will be fixed tomorrow. We are talking Microsoft here. I bet it will take quite a bit longer. They had our Xbox for almost 6 months. Good luck.

Oh yeah, your FRIEND Mike has put his foot in his both again, take a look over at Engadget where he clearly lacks, a firm definition of the term “netbook.” as he is calling a BlackBerry Storm one is — how do you say? — a bit of a stretch. Netbook? It is hardly a “smartphone” HAHAHA

Holy shit, I read this story, went to the car to run an errand, and found my Zune unable to boot up. Pretty funny actually, assuming the problem is easily fixable. iPod owners can laugh all they want, but the rate of HDD fails on 1G zunes vs the iPods of the time are far lower.

Man, I loved my Zune (before it was stolen). Sucks about this bug because it’s a nice device otherwise and it will just mean more smug iTards laughing as if their choice of personal electronics somehow makes them better people (see Russ and Adi above).
