US sales of Sony PlayStation 3 decline 19% in November

Playstation 3

According to the Wall Street Journal, US sales of the PlayStation 3 in November declined 19 percent from the previous month. This decline comes at a time when Nintendo Wii sales have doubled and Xbox 360 sales have risen 8%. In Black Friday sales alone, the Xbox 360 reportedly outsold the PS3 three to one and we all know the Wii continued to dominate. No holiday rebound is projected for Sony as analysts expect December PS3 sales to continue to remain flat while sales of its competitors are expected to remain strong. Sony is also expected to miss its goal of selling 10 million consoles in the current fiscal year ending in March 2009. Despite the somber projections by analysts Sony remains optimistic, focusing on the console’s year to date sales which have risen 60% and stating that “it is working hard to close the quarter strong”. With sales sagging and competition heating up, will 2009 be the year Sony finally cuts the price on the PS3?

    I’m not surprised. It’s still relatively expensive and not everyone has jumped on the Blu-Ray bandwagon. In fact, most people haven’t even bought into the whole HDTV thing yet. It’s only now that manufacturers aren’t making SD sets anymore that people are having to buy HDTVs from stores now.

    $199? How? At that price, they might as well pay us to take them.

    PS3 is Xbox 360’s bitch. Guess everyone beat MG Solid and Resistance 2 then realized they have a shiny door stop.

    That is unfortunate. PS3 is the true “next generation” of the gaming consoles, unlike xBox, which is more of the same thing.

    Got mine over the holidays with GT5. xBox is looking like a bad joke.

    I have a PS3 and I like it. But there isn’t a must have title in it’s game selection. MGS was ok, but I stopped about 4 hours in.

    HokiePS7, nope.

    PS3 even looks like one, not to mention superior graphics, Blue-Ray and easy-to-use interface. Not to mention that it automatically found my video and music library on the home server using its built-in wireless.

    Over xBox 360, PS3 offers superior graphics, faster processing and Blue-ray. All three components is what makes it “the next generation”, while xBox 360 is sorta generation 2.5

    there’s a lot of exclusive games coming out in ‘09 so hopefully they’ll be able to move more consoles.

    everyone is figuring a price cut of at least $50, but with bundled hardware and hdd upgrades, it might not be that visible.

    @jesterhead – err… what’s wrong with all the other games that are on the ps3 and it’s BD capabilities? why waste it as a doorstop?

    I would really hope that before you make such an idiotic comment, (PS3 being a doorstop), that you would educate yourself. The PS3 is hardly a doorstop but then again, it doesn’t seem like you know much about about it with the above comment.

    hmm, better graphics you say? google “xbox 360 vs ps3″ sometime. I won’t link it here… x360 almost always beats, and at the least matches sony in gaming quality. bluray and built-in wireless add to the “next gen” but only as periphrials, we’re talking gaming machines here.

    Xbox 360 and ps3 have pretty much the same graphics. if you read a lot of the comparison test online you really have to pick at the little things. xbox might render textures better while ps3 may have better shadows. im an xbox person tho. gr8 online gaming.

    Blueray is PS3’s only saving grace. I believe that DVD is one the main things that made PS2 as successful as it was. The price just needs to be competitive. As for gameplay, I love my Wii.

    My brother got a PS3 under the tree… I still can’t play Halo or Gears of War on it so I don’t see the point in owning one. My point here is you buy a gaming console to play games.. not for all of the extra crap loaded on to the PS3.

    @ MiniMe

    I own a 360 because it’s a GAMING CONSOLE, not all the peripheral crap you reference. I have a Blu-Ray for the purposes of playing Blu-Ray. You can have your all-in-one machine with no games to play on it. If you think the gaming library can snif the games available to the 360, you’re kidding yourself. If that works for you, congrats. I have played a PS3. Was not impressed by the graphics to be honest.

    @StevenGlansburg,
    Funny cause i bought my PS3’s (yes I have 2, 1 for my living room and 1 for my bedroom) for the exact opposite reason, Yes I play the occasional GT5 and do enjoy Tony Hawk they prmarily server as home media. they both link directly to my media server (quite easily and nicely i might add), both play Bluray, and both are plugged into my surround sound to play music during get togethers. they stream video from sites like hulu. seriously if you just buy it for gaming your missing out on alot.

    tThe Xbox 360 and ps3 don’t have the same graphics the ps3 is a lot better. If you Google xbox360 vs. ps3 it puts the same game up against each other. the company that makes the game for the Xbox version all they do is copy it over to the ps3 so its the same thing. Now if you put MGS4 up to gears of war 2 what ones batter? MGS4 and that doesn’t max out a ps3 so trust me the ps3 has a way batter future ahead of it.

    What good is all of that if there aren’t any GOOD, EXCLUSIVE games? Resistance, MGS4 and Littlebigplanet are the only 3 system exclusive/sellers I can think of. The extra features are just the icing on the cake. Sony also can’t figure out if it is a media center, or a video game console (the psp suffers from this ID crisis as well). Figure that out, and MAYBE the gaming populace will adapt. Until then, my 360 with Ninja Gaiden 2, Gears of War 2, Halo 3, Left4Dead and the likes will do just fine. :)

    CrownSeven says:

    The PS3 was Sony’s trojan horse to get blu-ray out to the masses, and thats its ONLY saving grace at this point. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least half of the people buying these machines are buying them just to play blu-ray movies.

    And that is the reason why the PS3 HAS failed. Its STILL too expensive to compete with the Wii/360. Even if they do find a way to cut 100 dollars off the price of a PS3, they’ve missed the boat. Everyone has a WII, and everyone else has a 360. Christ the 360 is even cheaper than the WII at this point. The game producers know this, and except for the Japanese, have abandoned the PS3.

    And please don’t tell me the PS3 is so much more superior than a 360. Its known that the PS3 is too difficult to program for, to expensive to build, and in terms of features the 360 has it beat on every point. Throw xbox live in the mix, and there is no contest.

    @Jess
    And if we want to talk about media capability – ever heard of media center? Lets see, you bought two PS3’s for 400 a piece, just to connect to your server to play music? Wow. I bought two 360’s for 400 total, connected them to my windows media center PC, and watch and record tv, dvd’s, music.

    as interesting as it is to read the back-and-forth between the PS3 and 360 owners, just a point of interest, but I think we (the Wii owners) have spoken in terms of what is important to the consumer.. the titles, gameplay and price. The Wii’s tech specs are far below that of the Xbox360 and the PS3 yet sales are through the roof.

    End of the day, all the fancy specs in the world won’t amount to much if the titles are lacking and the price is too high. Gamers just want to have fun (and not go broke in the process).

    With standalone Blu-Ray players running less than $399, Blu-Ray adopters aren’t buying PS3 anymore.
