LG to announce wristwatch phone at CES
Grab your trenchcoat, fedora, and drum-fed machine gun because LG has cooked up the perfect watch to help you bust crime and keep in touch with those you need to be in touch with. One advantage you’ll have over Dick Tracy however, is that the LG-GD910 is a 3G enabled wristwatch phone and it has an MP3 player. The new watch/phone is also said to have text-to-speech capabilities (useful for such a gadget), voice dialing, Bluetooth and a front-facing camera for video conferencing. As with most nifty novelties, this will likely make its debut in Europe before it comes to the US (if it ever does). What do you all think – useful, or pointless?

I use my watch to: a) time my runs, b) an accessory, c) to know what time it is. I think watch phone is a little too much.
bond. james bond.
I’d get one. if there was a pink one and they weren’t a million dollars.
didn’t Dick Tracy have one of these?…
I’d want one if it wasn’t crazy expensive…a crowd pleaser.
The price point will determine if there is a market. We will find a use for the phone. We use to think that people talking with headsets especially bluetooths looked weird. This will look weird with everyone talking to their wrists. Will not be so weird after about a year.
Pointless.
You will be the coolest nerd on the block.
This actually could be cool but using Bluetooth only would suck.
Problem solved for all:

obviously not going to appeal to the smartphone crowd, but i’d pick one up if it wasn’t outrageously priced. even for a flash in the pan gadget that it may end up being, it’d be fun to have one for a little bit.
Unless it’s dirt cheap, I don’t see it catching on. People use their phones for more than just
calling – not even Web surfing and whatnot, but text messaging would be a nightmare.
Wow, a reason to finally use video calling. If it wasn’t $3.7M, I’d cop one and go Dick Tracy all up in this bitch
i think it could be nice. using a bluetooth at the gym and not worrying if you $500 blackberry will be stolen would be nice. going for a run/walk and just bringing the watch would be cool, but as a primary phone, the battery would have to be amazing. i dont see it lasting more then a few hours using a bt headset
I’m a snob. I’ll only wear a real mechanical watch.
pointless
I want one now! I’m 68 and began reading “the funnies” with my father when I was five years old. I’ve wanted a Dick Tracy “two-way wrist radio” ever since then. This is the modern equivalent!
Very great idea! No need to have a phone in a geeky holster on your belt, or have phone in a pocket. I have a watch on anyway so why not minimize the number of gadgets on my person?. Great Idea!, but does it display the time while I am talking?
lmaoo @ Blaxx…i’m with you homie
Nice idea but it doesn’t appeal to me……. Michael Knight had one remember knight Rider and Kidd the talking car……lol
You won’t ever see me using this. Ever. Maybe back in the day when I was into Power Rangers and I could play pretend, but… Just… No.
Even if I was to use bluetooth, the watch would get all scratched up.
I’m sorry, as kitchy and childish as some of you think this is, you’re easily going to see uses for it.
I’m a runner, and I always struggle with having a music player and a phone so I can listen to music and have the capability to make calls in emergencies. Smartphones have solved most of that issue nowadays, but still. It would eliminate the lost phone thing. Great for sports, skiing/boarding come to mind right away.
Yes, you’ll lose some functionality (texting, smartphone), but for a backup voice-only phone, it may be just the ticket.
You know, the more I think about this, the more I like it. Taking phone calls while driving (checking caller ID on watch vs. phone display). I love my smartphone, for when I need it. When I’m going to dinner and a movie with the family, i don’t want to have to shove my phone in my pocket. Damn things bigger than my wallet! it’d be easier to whip the watch on, and go. Granted i’m not keen on wearing a BT headset all the time, but to have it in a pocket ready to put on is not too bad.
Great for sports … in tennis its nice to know who is calling ewven if you dont want to take the call
The report didn’t specify but I’m guessing it’s GSM only since it’s got HSDPA (and not EVDO).
But if GSM, then tri-band like all those watch phones currently out of China? Or will be it be a true quad? Guess we’ll have to wait until next week to find out.
Personally, I’d get one if it’s quad band and the price was reasonable for an unsubsidized phone.
This would make a great second phone, (like a netbook is to a notebook)… for those nights you don’t want to carry around your cell phone and if you don’t mind wearin a BT headset. And well, we know some people who don’t know to take BT headsets off… this should DEFINITELY appeal to them lol.
