Contrast is not bullshit. It has modulating backlight unit. Backlight consist of group of leds . Single led can be individually turned down or up in intensity. This way not whole image intensity goes down if only some part of the image is more dark. It is not a perfect solution, but it is still the best available at the moment.

This is definitely the sexiest HDTV I’ve seen thus far but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be a great performer. Hopefully it lives ups to it’s great stats. But contrast ratio doesn’t really mean much because it almost always the dynamic contrast ratio that is advertised by the manufacturer instead of the real or “native” contrast ratio. So on a set that claims a 2M:1 contrast ratio, my guess is that it is only 20,000:1 native contrast ratio at best.

The 240Hz does sound nice in theory, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be that great. When reading about the new Sony HDTV that is coming out with 240Hz, I found that 240Hz (on the Sony HDTV) wasn’t even that much of a step up from 120Hz. And for doubling the refresh rate, I’d expect better results than that.

I’m sure LG isn’t the only HDTV manufacturer that we will see have a 2M:1 contrast ratio or a 240Hz set though, so we will just have to wait for CES to see what the other manufacturers come up with too.

You’ve gotta be modulating the backlight level to claim something like that, which means you’ll never get 2M:1 in a single frame, plus you’ll see colors pump up and down in brightness as the content of the scene changes. Publish the real, same-frame stat, please, LG, because no-lamp-dimming is the mode I’d use it in.
