And so it ends: AT&T users report network outages amidst Wal-Mart’s iPhone 3G launch
Oops. Murphy’s Law may be in full swing today for the country’s largest GSM carrier at the worst-possible time – iPhone 3G / Wal-Mart launch day. We’ve yet to have any issues in the New York area but emails are hitting us en masse from AT&T customers reporting network outages across the east coast and beyond. Most reports recount difficulties with connecting via AT&T’s 3G network but some go further to detail voicemail difficulties, BlackBerry service outages and even complete network outages spanning hours at a time. This is obviously a pretty big deal for Wal-Mart locations in affected areas – imagine switching from your current carrier to snag a shiny new iPhone 3G and stepping out of the store only to find that your new toy won’t make a voice or data connection. Yikes. We spoke to AT&T after hours customer service and after about 30 minutes on hold, they did confirm “reports of network troubles” but couldn’t (or wouldn’t) specify which regions might be affected or whether or not these issues had been resolved. Time to sound off, BGR readers – any problems in your area?

……U THINK U GOT ISSUES……I GOT A NEW i 3G ABOUT 40 DAYS AGO, AND HAVE ISSUES HOLDING A DATA CONNECTION ALL THE TIME, AND JUST GOT MY BILLING, WITH ABOUT A $2,700.00 “DATA” CHARGE……AND ATT FIRST SAID….PAY IT…..AND NOW ARE CHECKING IT?????
ANYONE ELSE HAVE PHONY DATA CHARGES???? OR KNOW HOW TO HANDEL/DEAL WITH IT AND WITH ATT MOBIL?

@David Andrews . You must be top level at tmobile since you can work a computer keyboard.. Maybe you should recommend tmobile to 2nd grade so they can get my billing right once.. I mean.. Simple arethmatic is still taught in school these days right? Sometimes outsourcing to India has it’s benefits
AT&T up now… I’m in Huntly, IL… Was downall day. Just made my first call.
Had issues this morning around 2am. No signal at all. Occasionally one bar on EDGE but would eventually change to No Service. Located in the central valley in California. Fresno area.
My Verizon Strom is working great!

EDGE is working again here near O’Hare. 3G still down and people still can’t call me.
So frustrating. I’ve been trying to setup call forwarding to another number but it keeps failing on the network side.
I just called AT&T tech support for B2B for a network update. The rep I spoke to advised me that she hasn’t heard anything about any issues today and proceeded to ask me to pull out my battery to do a hard reset. ARRGHHH! Where do they find these people?
Here in the wilds of northern New Jersey I’ve had a strong 3G signal all day. No problems for quite some time now. I’ve tested my signal on a Blackberry Bold, a RAZR2 V9x, and a Treo 750. Early reports said the outage was largely a midwest phenomenon, with pockets of trouble elsewhere but no other major outages.
One thing is for sure. AT&T screwed the pooch with the iPhone and their fragile 3G network.
I agree RAS: Too much marketing but not enough resources and preparation behind the network.
I will admit that I love my iPhone despite the fact that it misses a few key features I loved using a RIM product. It’s just the network leaves a lot to be desired at times.
Yeah, today is an outage, but the intermittent call quality and dropped calls are a daily occurance.
I keep hoping the bad publicity would embarrass them enough to revamp the network but somehow I see them laughing their way to the bank knowing they are getting so much by putting out so little.

…….U ARE RIGHT….I GOT A unlocked STORM….AND QUICKLY PUT IT BACK ON E-BAY AND SOLD IT FOR WHAT I PAID FOR IT, AND WENT BACK TO MY B/B BOLD…AND iPHONE……

Yep – sporadically off and on all day in the Milwaukee area.
If you call the after hours line, and ask for a credit, they’ll give ya $25 off your bill.
(It’s better than nothing!)
So I called AT&T and had an interesting conversation about this…the outage spans about 6 states. I wrote a bit about it on my blog. I show 3G coverage here in Saint Paul, Minnesota but none of the internet functions actually work.
Customer service unavailable on sunday? Hah. Comedy.
