New BES features for BlackBerry OS 5.0 outed
It’s been a while since we gave the world its first look at BlackBerry OS 5.0, and now a list of available enhancements for BES users has surfaced. As long as everything is set up properly on the server-side of things, users will finally be able to have some features that they have long desired. In the past, to add, delete or edit a folder, one would have to do so through a computer. With 5.0 however, it will be possible to do this from the device. Users will also be able to store personal contacts separately from business contacts without having to resort to filters. Calendar options will have the option of being forwarded and sharing documents and media will be able to done through the Files application. On the Visual side of things, RIM is apparently working on a way to make emails sent from devices look as they would if they were sent from Outlook. As for when OS 5.0 will be made available, no one really knows but there is speculation that it will be acknowledged during Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) in April. Anyone taking bets?

This is great…now holla at me when 5.0 hits the BIS
Given RIM’s track record for OS updates, I wouldn’t expect this until late 09, at best.
Or, it could be like Sprint, I doubt we will every get MMS or 4.5 on our Curve
Ahh … to be able to forward a calendar item ….. It’s the little things
@ mike
Don’t forget that the 8830 has been around longer then the curve so we feel the step child no one loves!
@veks
I know, I bought my gf an 8830 last summer because the Curve was sold out at the time, not knowing the shortcomings such as no MMS, no OS updates. I bought myself a Curve in October still without doing my homework.
Just because Sprint doesn’t offer it, doesn’t mean you can’t get 4.5. Go on BB Forums and can find the latest 4.5 release for your 8330. There is no difference between these releases and what Sprint will eventually release. I installed 4.5 on my ATT Curve months before ATT released it.
I can go right ahead and install the 4.5 provided by RIM, and then if I ever need any service on my phone while I am out and about I get to fight with the half wits at the store because it isn’t an “official” Sprint release.
@Mike
Really? U have THAT many issues with ur phone that u stop by the Sprint store periodically? If u ever have an issue that u can’t resolve urself, just downgrade back to ur old OS. Very simple and definitely worth it.
I don’t have issues with my phone, I am saying if I happen to be out and have an issue can I just stop by and get it looked at by a service center? I highly doubt it, they either would say you violated some agreement or other and try to charge and arm and a leg, or I would get out of my contract somehow through it.
I am more than happy with my level of service and price of my plan with Sprint, and I have used plenty of “iffy” software apps on older phones and my computer on a regular basis. I was just making points since all too often people just say to use the RIM release and don’t worry about it.
If it was that simple then Sprint wouldn’t even need be involved with the OS updates, we would get them all from RIM first hand, but since Sprint uses proprietary software (music, TV, no MMS etc.) then using a generic 4.5 might not be the best way for SOME people to go.
The vast majority of users out there are the ones that strictly stick to the Sprint OS, or don’t have the know-how or even the confidence to do an OS update on their own, what are the majority of users to do then? Sprint just needs to get on the ball and get the thing released already.
