Wal-Mart finally confirms iPhone 3G

It took a while, but Wal-Mart has finally gotten around to confirming what we’ve all known for over a month now: the iPhone 3G will be sold at Wal-Mart beginning this Sunday. Thanks to the Wal-Mart deal, Apple now has a direct avenue into a host of new markets thanks to stock on its way to more than 2,500 Wal-Mart locations along with 69 Sam’s Club locations. It this big news? Of course it is – but the real news will surely come when Apple’s next handset announcements are made sometime in 2009. Will a $197 phone with a $30/month data plan sell in Wal-Mart? Sure it will, you can bank on it. A smaller, cheaper device however, will sell like hotcakes at Wal-Mart and once Apple announces it there will already be a killer sales channel in place as a result of this deal. Good show Apple; the US smartphone market is well on its way to being dominated by Apple just as it did with iTunes and the digital music market.

If they figure out a way to compete with BES it’s game over.

I don;t think they want that headache, activesync is as far as they should want to support. Stick to what they have already and expand on that.

This will bump the sales through till they release the next version.

I personally think this is great. The more venues, the better. The more Apple hardware that sells, the more revenue Apple will put into innovation and delivering the unique Apple experience. I hope more and more Macs will sell too.

G1 is so much better and priced better at wallyworld. You buy it at WM and you get a $50 gift card right there.

You better hope that cupcake kicks some ass. It should make or break the g1 along with the charging for apps. If that doesn’t work then i pray for android

G1 = no battery life, although the OS will eventually be good.

I have a G1 for my tinkering; but I bought an iPhone for my wife, sister (a Touch), and mother-in-law. They bought their own apps and music. They have gotten other people to by iPhones and gave away iTunes gift cards for Xmas.

The concept of open source may be better for me, but Apple’s ecosystem approach is winning the war right now.

How fitting. WalMart has risen to the top selling cheap garbage to the lower class. The Iphone will fit right in with their other inventory and appeal to their target market.

I was at Walmart last night and they have a fully functioning display model to play around with. Great phone but seriously needs cut n paste and the ability to use 3rd party software keyboard without jailbreaking.
