Farewell VHS, we’ll miss you – thanks for the memories!

Remember those Friday nights when you’d rent video tapes by the bundle and watch them all as fast as you can because they were due back in two days and you knew it would take an eternity to rewind each one? Though we’ve come a long way from finely tuning the tracking knob on VCRs for better picture quality, we’re still going to miss these giant cassettes, if not for nostalgia. These days, it’s all about high-definition, Blu-ray and digital sound, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It was bound to happen sooner or later, and Distribution Video Audio in Burbank, CA, the last large-scale distributor of VHS tapes, has shipped its last batch. Anything left over will be given away or thrown away. Farewell, large, black, and cumbersome video tapes! We won’t forget you, until we do of course.

    It is a little sad, but I will always have my VHS tapes of cartoons from the 80’s and 90’s. Every so often, I will watch from time to time.

    Oh how time does fly by. I can remember only having VHS tapes and the first time I heard “DVD” and watched one. That was when DVD players were new and cost an arm and a leg. Now you can go out to Wal-Mart and get one for 30 bucks.

    Bye-bye VHS.

    So you all may be too harsh on the geriatric technology that is VHS. How long has it been around? 30+ years? DVD didn’t even make it that long before it was replaced by HD and the Blu Ray. So, as much as I can show my appreciation for a plastic and somewhat internally animate object….thank you for the many years of great cartoons and awesome movies.

    yeah dvds where replaced but there in different format, the physical size of the dvd has not changed since there intorduction. so technicaly dvds have not been phased out, im sure when they came out with high capacity recording tapes that where like 6hours if i remember correctly they didnt say VHS has taken its course. dvd is the most brilliant idea in a long time. im not into the HD or blueray dvds, but i did see the dark knight on blueray and thought it was stunning, im not the kind of person to go out and buy a $900 HD tv a $500 blueray player just to watch a movie, if your trying to compensate for something just do the old school way buy a big flashy car. and im sure if i made $600 $700 a week at my job which i assume most people who boast about haveing blue ray does, then good for you, do you want a cookie ?

    Matt,

    Your point, although somewhat valid, is extremely diluted by your bad grammar and spelling. No wonder you make $600/wk. Sure, I’ll take a cookie…if you can afford it.

    now video goes 2 different ways:
    1. high definition
    2. mobile
    DVD will still be around for few years, as there’re a lot of DVD players/recorders/drives around

    @Matt
    You can get a blu ray player for $200, and an hd tv for ( not a 60″ of course ), for around $400… You can get a flashy car for $30,000, then pay maintence fees, gas, brakes, tires, tune-ups…… Just sayin’

    PS Bye bye VHS, I miss you already!
