AT&T acquires Unicel and Vermont finally gets the iPhone

While most of us have been toying with iPhones for quite some time now, it’s easy to forget that not every city or state can enjoy the same luxury. Either AT&T coverage is terrible or there is no AT&T service in the area at all. Now that AT&T and Verizon have finished their transactions and have swapped some markets, the acquisition of Unicel means the good folks in the home of Ben & Jerry’s can finally get in on the iPhone action. Good news, right? Even better, ten Unicel retail stores will be fully converted to AT&T stores by February – and as a result, seventy-five new jobs will be created for Vermont. It would appear as though this is a win-win situation. Any VT folks here excited by the news?

I’m more excited by the other phones that will be available, than I am by the iPhone. Verizon’s horrible when it comes to smartphones.

Yay! 75 new jobs..I may have to move to Vermont cause here in B’ham, AL the job section has been about 2 pages deep as of late. A year ago it was 10 to 15 pages

My brother goes to school up in Vermont… he’s close to Burlington, so maybe that’s why, but the AT&T service is great up there. Last time I went up there we were all around the general area of Burlington/Colchester/etc, and never had a problem with AT&T’s service.

I suppose it’s good that there’s national service there now, but AT&T? Sorry, but nothing to be really happy about.

My ex is from Vermont. As far as I’m concerned she can be a dumbass and buy one. Hahaha

No really though, that’s weird that a state only had one wireless offering before. Then again I think my little town has more people than the entire state of Vermont.

I have T-Mobile in RI but go to school in Vermont and roam onto Unicel, does that mean I will roam onto ATT now?

I have an iPhone and am originally from vermont, but when I come home it has always worked. It’s Edge, but nonetheless, it still makes phone calls and gets data, even with the roaming feature turned off. Weird….

I am a Vermont native, and it’s about fricken time! Maybe I will ditch T-Mobile and get ATT. Hope they put in 3G up here, I know that Unicels GSM network can’t do 3G.

STOWE VT Is awesome BTW. Come visit and play in the snow!

Does anyone here know whether this will allow all areas of Vermont to go with AT & T or is it select areas of Vermont?

I have had Unicell for 10 years now and this is the first I have heard of this! Nothing included with my bill or any mailing of any kind. So maybe it is not happening in the Northeast Kingdom? I don;t really want to be with ATT from what I have heard of their customer service. And I don’t want to change my plan since I am without contract and happy with my price point for the coverage I have. Oh well, another adventure looms.

not a comment as much as a quesstion. I have an iphone that i have had for a year. i live part time in NYC and part time in Vt. i get absolutely terrible coverage in Vt (Norwich/Hanover area) but my wife who has Unicel gets full coverage throughout the area. when ATT takes over the Unicel network will i finally get coverage? i hate this situation and was just going to go get a verizon phone to use up here.

That does not make sense to me. I have ATT service from CT and I get great coverage on the Unicel network in Brownsville.

I had a friend who got their cell phone service for a while from NY cause they were driving truck they could get it even though they lived here. They had great coverage. My Husbands service is Unicel through Williston, my Unicel is from St Jay, his service is way better than mine. Figure that one out, these are same phones too. Ny friends was not the same phone. I hope that when we switch to AT&T (which by the way I couldn’t wait to get away from when they had landline service cause they screwed the public rate wise) we get some decent service not matter what phone, or region or where in the state we are. Because I believe we will be paying through the nose for the service

Now ATT needs to add towers so we can get reception around the Lake Hortonia area. We had to put in a landline!

@Whiplash – The service is currently just “g” or edge, kinda slow, but fast enough to stream with Pandora.

    The AT&T says Q3 or Q4 for 3g.

Funny, with a recession going on and VT always paying crap for wages, I am astounded that people seem to still be more concerned about being able to get their damn iPHONE than what their new cell phone bills will be. Personally, I am not too thrilled about being forced into AT&T and a monthly phone bill increase that is clearly on its way. So, for those of you out there that have the extra cash, enjoy your new iPHONE…and pay some of my bill increase, will you?

I am from Johnson, VT and you have until December 31, 2009 to switch over to AT&T or they shut your service off for Unicel. But if or when you do switch over, AT&T won’t charge you a connection fee and Unicel won’t charge you for what’s left on your contract.
