iPhone 3G unlock demo goes smoothly, SIM lock is toast

Yesterday we told you that the Dev-Team was preparing to demo its iPhone 3G unlock concoction via Qik. If you happened to be frantically running around trying to take care of last minute holiday madness as we were, you might have missed the show. We didn’t get around to watching the demo until this morning in fact, but we’re glad we did as MuscleNerd’s demo was great. The Dev-Team’s yellowsn0w solution is fantastically quick and painless, despite the fact that the Team hadn’t even had a chance to prepare a GUI yet. So people, if you have a case of iPhone 3G envy but don’t feel like signing a new carrier contract then get your eBay gloves and a pot of coffee ready – yellowsn0w is a go and it’ll be in your hands, courtesy of the Dev-Team, on New Year’s Eve. Great work fellas!

    Anyone know how he got the display on his screen? Is this the same as the hack that allowed people to play games on the remote display? If so, how do you enable it for a generic, always on situation?

    I just bought a new iPhone 3g, and I don’t understand the hoopla around this unlock.
    Has the iPhone 3g not been unlocked or jailbroken yet? Or is this unlock free from accidental bricking by future updates? What’s unique about this unlock? I iz confused.

    @abhishek,
    The iPhone 3g has been jailbroken but not previously soft unlocked (unlocked for any carrier by only software means), previous unlocks either required the device to have a sim insert which tricked the phone into thinking you were using a ATT sim, or required cracking the phone open and bypassing the security chip by re soldering certain circuits (as done by some company in asia), this is a simple program you load onto the phone and its done.

    great job dev-team my brand new iphone 3g ive had in a box for 3 months will finally be able to be used jan 1!!!!

    This maybe a stupid question but I read somewhere awhile ago that said an unlocked 3G iphone would be able to work on the verizon network as the phone has a CDMA radio? Any truth to this?

    Why would people bother with this? There are officially unlocked versions of the iPhone all over ebay for practically the same price as the locked US versions. As far as I know, the ones overseas are identical to the US version. Maybe I am wrong, but it seems too much trouble to go to for a mediocre phone that has proven to have an insane amount of restrictions even when it is unlocked.

    @ JJ:

    iPhone is NOT CDMA. VZW was stupid enough to reject the iPhone when it was offered! Unlocking would be useful if when traveling you wanted to get a local SIM card in that country if you wanted to save money. Or run the iPhone on T-Mobile in the US (god knows why).

    @ BoogerEater – shortsighted comment. For us world travelers, this is a big, big deal. Think of the impact outside of the US mobile marketet, bro.

    Seriously, I think you should be the last one referring to anything as laughable.

    So once the phone is unlocked, any sim card can be put into it at anytime? I’m planning to go through a few european countries, so would the phone and its features(gps) work if I changed the card in each country?
