Case manufacturers at it again; iPhone nano in the works?

As much as everyone’s knee jerk reaction is to discount info like this, a brief pass over recent history tells us we probably shouldn’t be too quick to discount case manufacturers when it comes to leaking products. The iPhone 3G, second generation iPod Touch and even the current iPod nano model each had its form spied ahead of schedule as a result of leaks from case manufacturers – and now it might be the iPhone nano’s turn. This time around we’re not seeing any new imagery or mock-ups as we have in the past (though another manufacturer did leak an iPhone nano case mock-up earlier this year), but the simple “iPhone nano” entry on XSKN’s website could prove to be very telling. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or even an analyst to tell you that Apple will eventually be issuing a handset on the cheap to corner yet another market segment, but it looks like that could happen sooner rather than later. No, don’t expect it to happen at Macworld as you can be sure Stevo will be there to soak up the attention. At the same time, Apple has the goods when it comes to marketing, positioning and taking advantage of just about any situation. As the economy continues to hamper consumer spending, don’t surprised if we see Cupertino hit the competition where it hurts and enter the $100 and maybe even sub-$100 price ranges during the coming year.

and here comes the onslaught of comments about how bad this would be, lol.
What purpose would a tiny iPhone serve anyway? The screen would be too tiny of about 90% of the apps in the app store and the price point would make everyone and their mother have an iPhone on deck.

I don’t know if I’d discount it based solely on Steve’s absence. There has been a push lately to get others in the lime light as well. What would be a better time then a major launch like this.

I like my iPhone classic, but a bit smaller and much lighter with the same OS and perhaps some improvemnts like AD2P, what is not to like.

Well a Samsung Tocco sized iPhone would work. Heck the screen size on Sammys Armani was an ok size (even if the experience was lacking in terms of screen sensitivity and UI).

And at a lower price point it would be nothing but good for Apple – more users, more people using iTunes/App Store/iTunes Store. Accessory makers would be rubbing their hands as well at the thought of all those cases/scren protectors/useless docks they could sell too.

I think an iPhone nano that doesn’t have a lot of features would sell really well. Just a phone, text, camera, and iPod. No data plan required, just a regular voice plan.

If they do, it would be good if they could find away around the exclusive deal they have with AT&T and open it up to other carriers.

Just maybe the case company likes the web traffic from this. I doubt their will be an iPod nano. Why?

I´m not surprised to see a development like this. MNO´s have been compaining alot about
ARPU´s and would like to have a cheaper phone with lesser memory (1GB nano) to adresse lower market segments.Since Steve will have to give up his exclusive strategy anyway why not make a volkswagen instead of jet another beamer. :-)

Perhaps the Nano is a CDMA version destined for Verizon since rumors indicate that it will be lacking 3g?
