Fake image of new Mac mini might not be fake

So Macenstein received an image from an anonymous tipster that supposedly depicts Apple’s upcoming Mac mini refresh. Presumably, the image is of an on-screen ad or a slide that would, in theory, be displayed during the Mac mini announcement many still expect to come next month. Macenstein posted it with skepticism, the blogosphere immediately dismissed it as fake and it probably is. That being said however, the reasoning most blogs are using to dismiss it isn’t exactly firm – at all. Firstly, the marketing blurb, “The world’s smallest desktop computer.” Many dismissed the phrase as missing Apple’s common word play but in reality, Apple uses simple bold statements quite often in its marcom. In fact, this slide lines up pretty well with early MacBook Air slides. The second item of contention is the groove around the perimeter of the mini, above the CD slot. While many jump to the conclusion that this is a fold up display, that’s not what we’re getting. To us, it looks like a venting system. Anyone who has used a new MacBook or MacBook Pro knows that these things can get hot – fast. As the new Mac mini will be made of aluminum, whether or not the image above is real, it stands to reason that Apple would need to cool a device that stuffs all of its guts into a package so small. Sure the image above could be fake, but if you think it’s because of the blurb or the groove you might want to think again. On the other hand, if you think it’s because some anonymous guy sent it to Macenstein, well, you’re probably right. If it is fake however, don’t expect it to be far off from the real deal.

to me it looks like someone photoshopped a photo of a closed MBP and cut it to just show the drive slot.

I seriously dont get all the “hype” behind apple product development, and the months, days, etc leading up to a product launch. Its a small desktop? Doesnt dell make one? Why the big deal over this? Apple geeks need a new hobby.

That simpsons parody gets more and more real and less parody everyday.

The current “Mini” has a DVI out. The new one will probably have the new mini display port

It’ll have 2 usb, 1 mini display port, no fw, have an anemic 9400m and sport a festive $400 “apple surcharge,” compared to faster, more capacious mini-pc models.

Photoshop 100%. You can’t fit a DVD drive, a harddrive and a board in there. Even a Macbook can’t do it. Do you really think Apple’s low cost entry is going to have an expensive, aluminum unibody? What for? In a laptop, there are structural reasons to do it. In a desktop, there are none.

Twice as productive when they sit at starbucks and pretend to write the next epic movie script or love letters to steve jobs’ testes.
The simpsons parody is spot on I would say. You can’t argue with mac fans. They believe all that is Jobs is holy

Yea i don’t see what the hype is already in a field that has already been explored. But then again Apple fans can make the launching of a pen by JobsCo. seem like the greatest event in human history.

hrm. Where does the motherboard/processor/ram fit? The current mac mini has the footprint of the DVD drive, but is as tall as it is because that’s the only way to fit a processor, heatsink, and two slots of notebook memory. Sure most products are getting smaller and smaller, but I can only see two ways to get smaller with the current mac mini:
    1. ditch the optical drive –I don’t think this is very likely, as the Mac Mini isn’t a companion computer like the Air, it’s a “starter mac” for people who don’t have a mac or don’t have any other computer at all. An external drive would complicate it too much.
    2. the processor and at least one of the RAM units will be soldered to the board. The current mini has a processor socket so eliminating that could make it.. 2-3mm thinner. Then using heatpipes to relocate the heatsink to a more empty part of the chassis could probably reduce it another 10-15mm..

but this thing looks way too thin to be believable. I’m very excited though, I do plan on buying one of these the day it comes out. It’ll be my third mini :) they are great little utility machines. New one will probably replace my home theatre one :)
