T-Mobile G2 to be released on January 26th?

Yeah, we’re going to have to go ahead and file this one pretty low on the rumor totem pole, but supposedly T-Mobile is planning to release its second Android-powered handset just over a month from now. According to a leaked document from an anonymous CellPhone Signal tipster, the G1 sequel will be released on January 26th and will be dubbed, you guessed it, the G2. While the manufacturer isn’t specified, if it is real we have to assume HTC will be responsible for having nailed it together. As for specs, it’s no slouch:

  • Android OS
  • 3G, EDGE, GPRS and WiFi
  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • Touchscreen
  • Enterprise Capable
  • 5 Megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash
  • Secondary front-facing VGA camera
  • Memory card Slot (up to 16GB)
  • Mobile Backup
  • Music and Video Player
  • Picture Messaging
  • Real web browsing
  • Speakerphone
  • PC sync
  • USB interface
  • Video capture and playback
  • Video Messaging
  • Voice Dialing
  • myFaves capable and T-Zones (web2go)

Wow. If it’s real it should be quite an upgrade from the G1, though we worry that there is no mention of a physical keyboard on the document. Of particular note is the presence of a front-facing camera; apparently T-Mobile will also be launching a video calling service towards the end of January and the G2 will be one of T-Mobile’s first video call-capable devices. Yay, the service everyone talks about but no one uses! We’ll keep our collective ear to the ground with the hope that more solid info will come to light soon.

People, this is 100% absolutely a hoax. Not inaccurate, an outright malicious lie. I am absolutely shocked that it picked up any traction on any website. Thankfully the majority of you here see right through it. Forget the absolute improbability and just look at the huge holes in the document. The following terms aren’t even used by T-mobile on these listings (its a forged page from Streamline, T-Mobile’s intranet): enterprise capable, GPRS, megatones, USB interface, wallpaper, t-zones, wifi capable, 3G capable, and Android.

Any of you who were holding on to any hope that this is real and think the rest of us are just being negative… do yourself a favor and let that hope fly right out the window. You’ll save yourself a lot of disappointment later. Kudos to the prankster who propogated this. You got a hell of a lot farther than I would ever have imagined.

Sorry, I have to call this completely bogus. T-Mobile no longer offers anything called “T-Zones”. About a month ago it was replaced with either “T-Mobile Internet” or “WebtoGo”.

There is just know way that a supposedly leaked technical specification sheet for an upcoming device like the G2 would still say “T-Zones”…

I’d be mad if I bought the G1 only to have the G2 come out a couple of months (and not even that) later..

The fact that it lists as compatible with “T-Zones” aka Web-2-Go is the best indication this is just someone’s fantasy. As if T-mo is going to put a smart phone on a port blocked low end service.

The HTC/T-Mobile G2 will be released in late April but more likely early May. Bank on it. I know of no other devices in the pipeline that are going to run Android.
