Sprint and T-Mobile get new Samsung Android phone in June 2009
Samsung looks to be making sure it doesn’t get left out of the Android party in 2009 as it has just announced it will release an Android-powered handset much like the Omnia and Instinct. While it would be nice to see some new and exciting hardware, Samsung could have definitely picked worse handsets to base its virgin Android offering on. A Samsung rep was quoted as saying, “We are accelerating the development process for Google phone in order to meet the specific need of local carriers. We will be able to release Google phone in the second quarter of the next year in the US market.” Which carriers will those be? T-Mobile, which gets its second (or third?) Android device, and Sprint will apparently be graced by the Google gods. Sprint? Huh? Earlier this year, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse stated pretty bluntly that Android isn’t yet “good enough to put the Sprint brand on,” but apparently he’s singing a different tune these days. Anyone excited about this? Yeah… don’t raise your hands all at once.
Do you think this andriod power instinct will have a more powerful processor then its dumbphone counterpart? Or is it a reflashed instinct. Samsungs decisison for the touch based android phone leads me to believe that the g2 could possibly be only touch based too
looks like someone over at sprint took hesse into a dark corner and enlightened him on the possibilities and potential that android has. As well as the people that know of such things that would likely jump to sprint for a decent android handset (providing that customer service and coverage improves).
Coverage? Are you kidding me? Sprint roams free on VZW and the only time I’ve lacked signal in the past year is when I was in Yellowstone National Park. Not to mention they only charge $15/month for the fastest 3g you can get.
Customer service apparently used to suck (although I never noticed the few times I’ve had to call over the years) but I believe that has been turned around as of late.
Now they just need to learn to advertise and get a killer handset or two. The smartphones that make me drool apparently don’t do it for the majority of customers.
i dont want an Instinct or Omnia clone unless it has a keyboard, trackball and capacitive screen with atleast HVGA resolution
This guy wants one! I saw the pic before I read the headline and for a second thought someone had loaded Android onto the Instinct. My guess would be the guts of the phone would be similar to what is in the Omnia.

An Instinct or Omnia with Android would the best thing since sliced bread
I want an android phone for sprint. But i was hoping it would be made by HTC and resemble the G1
I think the G1 is kind of blah, did think HTC would be the 1st on Sprint w/Android

I was all set on the Android Instinct, now there’s the Pre, Bold and a slew of HTC’s. Choice is good
I work for radioshack and recently talked to the Samsung/Sprint Rep. Yes the android phone is on its way, and yes, its made by Samsung/Google. But it is not going to look anything like the Instinct, I’ve already seen the pics of it. Imagine however, a Samsung Propel w/ a larger screen, touch features, but a slide out Qwerty keyboard.
In Fall ‘08 before the first G1 was released, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said they werent going to be releasing an android handset just yet (i.e. as soon as T-Mobile because Spritn typically doesnt play the Guinea Pig role) but that Spring 09 or sometime in ‘09 that we could look for it. Hes not singing any different tune, its just like he said. Sprints been on board from the beginning.
