The nonsupport of CDMA phones is not a Verizon issue. I cannot run Sling mobile on my Sprint 8830 either. Because I thought Sling should work if YouTube works, I’ve had conversations with Sling about this. It is a Blackberry CDMA phone hardware issue for all CDMA models (probably explains why the Storm is not supported, too!). Sling is doing all it can. It’s in Sling’s best interest to have its player run on all Blackberrys and if Blackberry comes up with a resolution I’m sure Sling will implement.

Just got off the phone with Verizon, they purposefully block Slingbox on all data plans to protect VCAST. Been using ATT data plan with Slingbox for 2 years, works beautiful.

I’ve had my slingbox for 2 years now. Waiting in patient for the Blackberry release that was talked about a year and a half ago. Now, I have a VZW 8330, and have been at 4.5 for almost 6 months now, and I STILL CAN’T USE MY DAMN SLINGBOX ON IT!!!!

WTF, a waste in my eyes. Slingbox made a good product, but don’t tell us that blackberry is going to be supported and then only support 6 models. F’ing REDICULOUS!

Clayton – the Storm 9530 on Verizon has 3G. But in generally do we only support phones with 3G or WiFi.

cdub – The software will be available 12/30.

IncidentFlux – We charge for the SPM license because it costs money to develop and only a minority of our users use SPM. We felt it was better than bundling all the SPM development costs into the Slingbox pricing. It costs more to develop SPM than the desktop player, and the desktop is used by pretty much every Slingbox owner. For desktop there are really two versions to develop. For SPM we currently have five in release (Palm OS, WM Pro & Std, Symbian S60 & UIQ), BB makes 6, and iPhone will be 7. And developing and testing each of these is a lot of work given the variety of devices and the different CPU and memory issues, screen resolutions, input types, etc. And with all the extra work each release is used by a much smaller number of users.

The SPM license is transferable to new devices, so we don’t think $29.99 is too much to pay as a one-time license to use SPM.

DavidB – You missed the point of what I said. We (Sling) *cannot* support the CDMA phones. It is a platform issue that we’re working with RIM to resolve, and have been for a while. It is not within Sling’s power to resolve, there is nothing we can do about it, we’re awaiting a platform update.

You will pay a one time software license fee for sling mobile (the software for you mobile device) and you will purshase and install one of the many sling box models for your particular need.

Actually yes I DO think Sling is that dumb. This was announced FIFTY weeks ago, and still all we get is a very limited beta that only works with a minimal set of devices? Come on. I think Sling HAS been dumb if they’ve been working on this for a year or more and didn’t go actually DO what it would take to launch the product with full current model support. Other than the 87xx series of course, it is dumb to not support every 8xxx and 9xxx device (capable od running OS 4.5+).

Yes, it would be dumb to deliberately not support those models. Do you think Sling is truly that dumb? You should pause and ask yourself why we (Sling) would not be supporting them if we could. The answer is that not supporting them was not a choice, it was a necessity. If we could run SPM on those models we would.
