Sling Media announces public SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry public beta!

We bet y’all thought this day would never come, huh? Well, change your pants, people. It’s officially unofficial. Sling has just updated their website, and is in the process of sending out emails to people announcing that the much-awaited SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry software will enter into a public beta on December 30th. A nice late Christmas gift? You betcha’. We’re sworn to secrecy at the moment, but, how do we say this… You. Will. Love. It. The software supports pretty much all current models (ones with 3G and/or Wi-Fi are preferred) like the Bold, Curve 8900, Curve 8320, and Pearl Flip 8220. All in all, it’s awesome that this is finally being released. Boardroom meetings will never be the same…

    Awesomeness.
Productivity will decrease by a CAGR of 27.4% in the 4 years, we’ll fall deeper into recession, but Blackberry users will love watching The Office while in the office.

Interesting that no Verizon phones are supported. I wonder if this is a coincidence or if VZ somehow has managed to lock out SlingBox….on the other hand it does say that they are currently working on adding more devices so perhaps Storm owners will get their wish.

Alright, finally BlackBerry is joining the party. Now can they finally bring some Sling love to the iPhone…?

That would make me go out and buy a sling box immediately.

any word on the models for Canada? Same phones, but the site specifically mentions the U.S. carriers, does that matter?

Leaving out Verizon (or any carrier) EVDO Blackberry smartphones is just DUMB on Sling’s part. The early adopters they need buying into this for success are all rockin’ at least a 4.5.something OS that supports streaming video, so why not 8130/8330/8830/9530? Jeez, not supporting Storm at launch of Blackberry client is on the level of epic fail.

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch is in development and we’re not releasing any dates at this time. (Yes, we, I’m a Beta Program Manager at Sling.)

    MegaZone says:

Yes, it would be dumb to deliberately not support those models. Do you think Sling is truly that dumb? You should pause and ask yourself why we (Sling) would not be supporting them if we could. The answer is that not supporting them was not a choice, it was a necessity. If we could run SPM on those models we would.

    DavidB says:

Actually yes I DO think Sling is that dumb. This was announced FIFTY weeks ago, and still all we get is a very limited beta that only works with a minimal set of devices? Come on. I think Sling HAS been dumb if they’ve been working on this for a year or more and didn’t go actually DO what it would take to launch the product with full current model support. Other than the 87xx series of course, it is dumb to not support every 8xxx and 9xxx device (capable od running OS 4.5+).
