@JL: I was really tempted to get a G1 because it kept the slider QWERTY I love but added a better screen and a new OS. Unfortunately it is missing a few things I use regularly so hopefully later devices make that up. I need full Exchange sync (calendar, tasks, contacts, email), a working GPS (the G1 I tested had me across town regardless of GPS settings), and streaming radio (ie: shoutcast and Pandora) if I’m to switch from WM. The day Android gets these things either out of the box or via apps I will probably get an Android device.

I Hear you on WinMo. I was a long time WinMo user also and it worked as advertised. Yeah, WinMo phones don’t look all “pretty” like the “vowel” phone, but has many more applications and is well supported.

I have myself a G1 now, and I hear the same criticisms about looks etc. The “vowel” phone wasn’t perfect out of the box either and still needs work.

Don’t let the “pretty” phone people get you down.

@Dick Ward: For an epic fail it’s sure been doing what I need it to do for a while. Keeps my calendar, email, contacts and tasks synced to the phone at all times over the air. Lets me get GPS directions with TomTom, Google, Live, etc. Lets me listen to streaming shoutcast and Pandora wherever I am. Lets me browse the web. Not sure how that is an epic fail when it has been doing all that for me for the past year and a half. Oh, right, it’s not pretty all the time. I guess to some folks it’s more important how you look. I prefer versatility any day.

While we can kind of blame iPhone for the form factor…

Really, what more can be done with a touch screen device? It’s probably going to be rectangular, fit in your palm and covered with glass.

Not much more you can do – other than the back and/or sides…

For awhile, I think this is the form factor we are going to have – we should get used to it.
