Reconfirming confirmed confirmation: iPhone coming to Walmart

We’re now just over a week away from the culmination of an ongoing saga that has been the iPhone 3G’s dance over to Wal-Mart. Whew! For a bit of background in case you’ve been hiding from the economy in your basement for the past few months, BGR scooped it back in October, served it in November and then stirred it up a little in December. So far it’s looking like everything is falling right into place as a new letter emerges, essentially reaffirming everything we told you. This letter isn’t a mere redundancy however, as it provides the last pieces of the puzzle we hadn’t yet confirmed: size and price. Earlier this month we told you about a possible $99 iPhone that we were plenty skeptical about, and for the time being it’s a no-go. Wal-Mart will be selling the same 8GB and 16GB models everyone else has, for $197 and $297 respectively — a whopping $2 savings over competitors. Smooth move Apple; give Wal-Mart the ability to sell a discounted iPhone but keep other partners happy by making the discount insignificant. As for the possibility of a $99 iPhone, analysts might charge you an arm and a leg to tell you “it’s a distinct possibility” but it doesn’t take weeks of poring over blogs research and calculation to tell you it’ll be here sooner rather than later. But we digress. Hit the jump for a shot of the letter and get ready to get your iPhone 3G on, courtesy of the nation’s largest discount retailer, a week from Sunday.

Now I may have to sell mine… Not because I’m an elitist, but because I hate Wal*Mart. And because I’m an elitist.
For the love of humanity it is “poring” as in “to Pore” not “pouring”. That is unless you do some weird stuff.
Maybe the $99 4 gb iPhone will be the iPhone nano…
“Smooth move Apple; give Wal-Mart the ability to sell a discounted iPhone but keep other partners happy by making the discount insignificant.”
The $2 price difference has nothing to do with Apple. It’s simply Wal Mart sticking to not selling anything ending in a ‘99′. They don’t have anything for $99, $199, $299.99. Even if they did get a $99 IPhone, it’d be $97 or $98.
So, when will it really be confirmed?
Please confirm.
Can anyone confirm that it is confirmed that BGR is reconfirming a confirmed confirmation?
I confirm that the word confirm now looks and sounds weird to me.
I used to be upset about the idea of wal-mart selling the iPhone, and us (authorized dealer) not being able to. Word on the street is that the cost of the iPhone is such that even after subsidy, the profit (including all iPhone features) would be such a low amount that it’s not really worth the hassle of dealing with all the trouble shooting involved with the monstrosity which is the iPhone.
TRV$
Yea, I guess that it’s too much of a hassle…
Unless, of course, you like having a single product that entices people to come shop specifically at your store..
Too much of a hassle..
@ TRV$ and M:
Why do you think Best Buy sells the iPhone?
Stop it!!! ENOUGH! I’m tired of hearing about this. I don’t shop at Wal-Mart and I don’t want an iPhone.
Now the Iphone will be sold to the unwashed masses…. J/K
The unwashed masses????? You people are to much. Are you pissed now more people might get it? The only reason most of you got it was for the look at me look at me factor. Grow up and shut up. Most Walmart shoppers probably won’t get it because of the extra $30 data package that you have to have. So you elitest idiots can rest easy that your Iphone will be ok. God forbid a person that shops at Walmart would get an Iphone. It’s no wonder this planet is the way it is.
yes. im so getting one when it comes to walmart
only if it came before christmas….
oh wellllllll

Dude, you don’t get it. WalMart is, in a very large way, the reason this planet is the way it is. They buy everything from China, hire undereducated people for just above slave wages, and drive Mom and Pop business out of Main Street USA. And now this is the is the way to put even for cash in their pocket instead of the independent AT&T resellers. To hear you tell it, your an elitist if you buy an iPhone at AT&T or an Apple Store, but just a regular Joe if you get it at Wally World. The same people that shop WalMart have had the same ability to buy it at an AT&T store.
So come down off your your blue collar, workin’ man high horse. People had the same issue back when they were paying $500 on a contract to have the Razor then they started giving them away in cereal boxes. Or the same mentality when they buy a new car and then see a hundred others just like them pass by on the way to work. Sometimes, you want a little something that separates you from the “masses”. WalMart and it’s mass quantity mentality makes that hard to come by.
I stand by my joke. Apple has always pushed their “posh boutique” stores for their products, so for the Iphone to make it to Walmart basically means they are offering it to the unwashed masses.
@m
sarcasm noted..
I realize that as a business, any business is good business no matter how little money you profit. And yes it would be great to be able to increase business, especially in these times of financial woe. I get it.
Yet, as a working man, I want to see every minute of my productive work day yield the most amount of money that it can. Spending an hour educatingin the customer and processing the act/up only to profit the store $20, and gain a $4 commission doesn’t sound appealing to me. So I say let wal-mart have the hassle.
Thanks!
Who’s the idiot saying it would sell for $99? Oh, that would be YOU.
