Spot on. With the ‘net, who needs trade shows? The online Blackberry Developers Conference makes a lot more sense especially during an economic downturn.

I’ve never been on this side of the fence, I grew up with MS. But Steve Jobs was such a driving force for the industry, that he won the respect and admiration of friends and foes.

I would like to continue seen him in front of the crowds. That’s the place of the leaders. His followers need his presence. He is the symbol and symbols are always present.

I loved the keynotes but it did the company more damage then it did good, steve was becoming a god & everytime he piss on a parking meter the stock & company got hammer, so i think he did this for Apples best interest, it’s like people sometimes forgot the guy was a human being.

I think “blah” said it perfectly. I’m a staunch PC/Microsoft guy myself but I have to take my hat off to Steve. What he has done is astounding. The best thing that ever happened to MS and Bill Gates was Apple and Steve Jobs because it forced the competition to respect them and stay current. I too think Apple should now join CES and rock ‘em where it counts. WoWing fanboys at MacWorld is too easy. They can do it at CES and I look forward to that day.

trade shows are kind of old news anyway. Everyone already knows whats going to be released beforehand because of BGR and Engadget anyway.

Besides, a trade show is a set date and deadline they need to be ready for. With a press release, they can push back the press release until they are ready. Why wait for Engadgets liveblog of an event, when we all can see the same event at the same time via streaming HD video.

Say what you will, but kudos do go to Apple for taking a nice concept from the Xerox labs way back in 1981, making the PC a true consumer product. Cloned by MicroSoft into Windows. Changing computing forever.

They built a great music device (iPod) and delivery service (iTunes).

They’ve done the same now for cellphones with their iPhone, with every manufacturer trying to kill it(clone it).

Hats off to Steve and crew, and I wish him good health, and have enjoyed seeing a company continually adapt and change through ups and downs.

Of course MacWorld won’t be the same without Apple, but these days those events are strictly media events, and don’t hold the same weight as they did during those early years. Apple would be better served by participating in more global events such as CES, where they could showcase their products to the whole world stag, and not to just the phanboi network.

PS: As a former employee, circa early 80’s, I am very proud of the company and enjoyed my tenure while there.
