New Nokia patent introduces an interesting new form factor
The odds of us ever seeing this exact form factor in a Nokia handset aren’t great but a recently filed patent illustrates an interesting new take on the candy bar form. When closed and viewed head on as in figure 21 above, the handset looks like a standard QWERTY candy bar reminiscent of the E61i or E71. As figure 22 reveals however, half of the display tucks behind the keypad and pivots open to reveal what would be an amazingly large widescreen. We’re not sure why Nokia took the concept further than this, but figure 25 shows the display swiveling from side to side once open. The only reasoning we can think of for the swivel: Perhaps Nokia envisions the display rotating a full 180° and then folding back down so that the handset can be used as a full touchscreen device with the QWERTY keypad facing away from the user. Whatever the case, if the Finns can manage to plant a kick stand a la N96 on the back of the keypad it would make for some pretty sweet multimedia viewing, that’s for sure. Would you be interested in a swiveling, rotating touchscreen handset with a full QWERTY keyboard?
Thanks, Justin!

I want it. Now.
The concept looks interesting, but slightly uncomfortable to type on.
WTF!
This is remeniscent of the phone that Tony Stark uses in Iron Man..
Good God! Thats just too much.
The phone that Stark used in Ironman was the lg vx-9400, only with a camera stuck on the front. I seem to recall it still having the Verizon Wireless branding on it.
I like the other phone that Stark uses in Ironman. You know, the handsfree one, that can also be used at 30,000 feet, Mach 1, pulling 6Gs, all without dropping the call. I want his network for that matter.
I think this phone was designed to be used in the next transformers movie. It could be the new “Soundwave” as a cassette recorder might not fit in with the 2009 release and will probably not be recognizable to anybody born within the last decade.
very interesting. just a normal phone and then when you’re just hanging out and browsing the internet, you can make the screen bigger. i would definitely buy this.
@ u serious? Makes sense, makes sense…
My comment above should have read
@ marc d
u serious?
something about BGR that just makes u illiterate.
WOW! I love it! Big Screen and One-Hand-QWERTY. Simply amazing!
humm…….fascinating.
But why would anyone need a phone that big? The bold is big enough. And once a touchscreen phone with a physical qwerty keyboard comes out, next step up are small 9″ laptops runing linux or ubuntu os.
Hi!pkci! http://vilfqsks.com zchry rtdbz
LG did this years ago… what’s the big deal?
Not new. See link.

It is clear any negative comentary towards this technology is from NON media users. The concept of regular mode for Tel,TXT and Phone use is perfect but when you want a little more… Like MMS Streaming, Movies On Demand, Gaming Video recording, Digital TV to your phone…Yes reality soon. This will be a Killer application in the near future. Yes LG has a ‘flip Screen phone but not with a rotatable hidden, touch screen format. this may be soon but right now is looks like Nokia wants to LEAD not follow.
I particulary liked the line to SOFT Bank, Thanks
HMMN.. Why don’t we EVER see any phone products by SHARP in NA? EVER? maybe becaus the Telephony part of the phone (MOST IMPORTANT)does not work and they have NEVER been able to make a N.American Carrier’s ‘cut’ on selection of models.
BTW to the critics about the LG vx-9400, that was a 2″ screen, no touch…
Just cool looking but not functionally better as in the NOKIA application…
YES-I am a nokia fan and would never by an LG based on reliability. LG is always about Style and architecture but has never focused on performance and build quality from my experience. Also support from LG has always suffered on previous models.
NOKIA,MOTOROLA, RIM, SONY, all support devices from 2-4 generations old!!!
LG,HTC,Samsung ‘discontinue’ support after 6 month of release. This has now occured 3 times for me and my client’s on different devices.
Asia development is so quick that it seems to focus on NEW distibution before it has a chance to build customer satisfaction on existing equipment? Just a thought.
