RadioShack’s $100 connected Acer netbook gets official
It’s official people, the subsidized netbook from RadioShack we saw appear on a leaked ad earlier this week has been officially announced. This offer definitely isn’t for the casual user as it is accompanied by a 2-year minimum-$60/month contract with AT&T, but business users with a true need for constant connectivity can now save their companies some cash be snagging a well-specced Acer Aspire One netbook for a cool $100 from the Shack. Specs:
- Ultra-compact size measuring 9.8″ x 6.7″ x 1.1″ (W x D x H), 2.44 pounds
- Stylish piano-black finish
- Built-in 3G capability
- 802.11b/g wireless (Wi-Fi)
- 8.9-inch LCD screen
- Built-in Web cam
- Intel(R) Atom(TM) processor
- Windows XP Home
- 1GB memory
- 160GB hard drive
- Built-in memory card readers (dedicated SD and 5-in-1)
In terms of a travel machine, the Aspire One definitely delivers the goods and provides more than enough juice in a package weighing less than 2 1/2 pounds. Let’s hope this is a first step toward a new trend of subsidized connected netbooks that we can look forward to. The bottom line is that if you’re in the market for a new portable unit and a 3G modem with a $60+ monthly plan were in your cards anyway, you’d be crazy not to check out the Aspire One.

It looks like you’ve got the wrong picture up there, although what’s pictured and the device written about are pretty much the same machine – except for 3G connectivity.

is that $60 plan/service stand-alone or with voice?!
if it’s plain plan, it’s fine
if it’s voice addon, this’ll be $40 more expensive than VPN I currently use
$40×24 (2 years contract)=$960
it’s enough to buy 2 triple E and tether with my TM506, and use with VPN for $20 plus voice
I just checked with my local radioshack and they told me the sale starts this Sunday…..
time to sign up… and in 30 days pay the ETF

I work at radioshack…the sale starts sunday but u can reserve them now. Also that is not the one in the picture the netbook only come in black…and there’s so good bundle packages that are avaliable for purchase to go along.
I’m always wondering if these embedded GSM devices have a SIM card buried somewhere inside…

I’m sure they’ll have some kind of provision in place to prevent that from happening. If not, then it’s a very poor plan on their part.
my iPhone is literally faster. I had one of these, way too slow, took it back. I’m sticking to my iPhone.

Do you have to get Win XP? Can you just get Linux instead so that you don’t have to un-install Windows?
i juss bought one…i work for att and i can back date contracts so all i have to do it go into work and change my contract date back 2years and call and cancle and i got a good labtop for a 100 buck not bad
