Microsoft confirms once and for all; no Zune phone at CES

Just when we thought CES might be getting interesting… Over the past week or so, blogs have been going back and forth like a government decision on free broadband in terms of whether or not Microsoft would be debuting a Zune phone at CES next month. Some said maybe, some said no way and some went as far as to cite inside sources when claiming that Microsoft would definitely be introducing the world to the fruits of its Danger acquisition. As it turns out, no such luck. Brian Seitz, Group Manager of Zune for Microsoft, has made the official statement that Microsoft will not be bringing a Zune Phone to CES. It’s entirely possible that Microsoft may have something special in store for CES and it may indeed have something to do with the much-rumored “Project Pink”, but it will not be a new mobile handset dubbed Zune.

What the heck is a Zune phone? 1st what freggin OS is it going to run besides Windows mobile, 2nd it will only compete with microsoft partners that been using Windows Mobile, 3rd Why even try to make a Zune phone at all, it’s not like Zunes are flying off the shelfs, specially now with it doing even worst than last year, just look at best buy.com & Amazon.com under best seller, they’ve move from #7 last year to about #30 this year

This is totally understandable. With Windows 7 on the way, there simply weren’t enough BSODs available for a Zune phone. MS doesn’t expect the available BSODs to be sufficient until after Windows 7 SP3, so we’ll be waiting a while. But until then, feel free to pick up a WinMo device.

    hi says:

The reason microsoft needs to come out with a phone is because of MARKETING. Have you ever seen a commercial for winmo? Have you ever seen a commercial for iphone? Apple has $7 billion more in the bank than M$ (never thought I’d see the day) thanks to ipods and iphones.

Winmo has been out for 8yrs and it still can’t light anyone’s fire. The OEM & telco’s cannot write software (lookin @ u HTC & your driver issues) and mix like oil and water. Redmond needs to take the wheel & drive. Come out with a phone that is GSM & EVDO based (like RIM’s world phone). It should not be subsidized by telcos. MS can subsidize its own phone.

Every other business depending on winmo will benefit because of a focused MARKETING message (just get rid of Crispin Porter; its commercials are uninspired). Only RIM, Nokia, and Apple are focused right now.

A phone that can let me sync my personal calendar, email, notes, tasks, music, movies, pictures, & games via Azure… business calendar, email, and tasks with corporate Exchange… that will change the game.

You need to come strong or don’t come at all because iphone 3.0 is coming this summer. Make it hot MS, make it hot!

@dan, Well it’s not just this week, well actually this is the quarter where you expect any product to do good, so that alone shout tell you something, Also dumba*s i mention Amazon.com & best buy stats cause unless you been living in a cave for the last 10 years you should know they’re the US biggest retailers Dumbas*, some stores like office depot have already started to take them down do to really poor sales, something gamestop started doing to a few months ago

Don’t care if it has the Zune branding. I’ve always liked my Zune but it’s not the strongest brand. I’m more interested in a Windows Mobile 6.5 or 7 running on Tegra hardware. I would buy a Tegra phone on day 1 based on what I’ve seen so far.

    T$A says:

Actually it will be a Portable Console from microsoft to compete with The IPhone and PSP
and will most likely use verizon wireless
    as the wireless carrier.

new article published by the Inquirer revives those rumors with an interesting angle. The website suggests that the Microsoft-branded cellphone will be powered by Nvidia’s Tegra system-on-a-chip (SoC). The site even pinpoints the phone’s release date – 3GSM in February 2009.

The Tegra SoC integrates an ARM-based CPU and an Nvidia GPU core on a single die, in addition to a northbridge, southbridge and primary memory functionality. The first Tegra products are expected hit the market by the end of the year, but are believed to be limited to industrial and automotive applications initially. Since Apple appears to be determined to follow its own SoC route, Microsoft would be a huge win for Nvidia. And if that is in fact the case, the obvious question would be: What happened with Intel? Is the Moorestown SoC too late to join the party?
