So, multiple reports say that the iPhone 3G is NOT capable of running at 7.2Mbps, but supposedly the chipset used in the iPhone 3G is 7.2-capable. So, can someone answer the question of whether or not a firmware upgrade would activate this capability?

I'm CDN...love Canada too. Not sure what health insurance has to do with cell phone bills but I do agree with the comments from U.S.A. Our cell phone bills are outrageous here...and since we don't even get a kiss first...it might just be rape!!!

@charlesk

I am in the halifax area as well and i get constant 3g service throughout most of the province. In the city areas i ALWAYS get better coverage then my cdma friends but not always in rural areas. Although i do get 3g service in the middle of no where here in nova scotia. So much for just large cities:P

@bigwylie
it is true that with the wrong carrier down in the sates you can get some hefty charges. although when i was in dc in 2007 I used my htc smart phone and received all my service from at&t completely free.. guess i got lucky since i was there for a week and made international calls and even phone calls to florida as well as using my data.

N95-8GB IS 3.5 in most of TOronto, and has been since the summer 08. Loving the speed. Also my Bold indicates 3.5G too?
Raping?- the only raping is the Roaming and international (USA roaming) which is primarily the carriers US and Canada not being able to agree on fair NA roaming rates as the do in Europe?
My PLAN 18 years old is still unbeatable and data is $30 for 6GB? for $60 a month I can play on the phone 'til I am blue in the face and have not hit more than 3 GB!!!!
I think rogers has a great offer. NO I do not work for them. and I would like to see the CRTC step in and force the premium carriers to ditch the Sys Acces Fee money grab.
Just some Venting. Sorry.

The E71 also works works on 3.5g. Mine flips back and forth between 3 and 3.5.
Though i generally use Skyfire to surf so 95 percent of the time im running on EDGE and there's no speed difference only battery life. Now ny battery lasts like three days of texting, emails, talking and some surfing. It's awesome.

The N95 8GB is 3.5G capable... actually i've been using rogers 3.5g network for sometime now.

I started noticing the 3g turn into 3.5G on the N95's display about 4 months ago.. i just thought that was normal.

I'm in Halifax on my N95 and it's pretty awesome. My reception is just fine.

The N95 8gb is on the Rogers network. you could add that to the list of capable phones

I’m in Halifax on my N95 and it’s pretty awesome. My reception is just fine.

The N95 8gb is on the Rogers network. you could add that to the list of capable phones

"1. I dont live in Canada, and Im not raped of data charges (Sorry Michael, your country is beautiful and the first country Id renounce my US Citizenship to, but the mobile carriers rape you all brutally)"

I'm enjoying the "raping" here, with unlimited data, including tethering, for CDN $5/month (grandfathered, now $10) on Bell/Telus and their combined networks, with transparent roaming, has at least ten times the coverage of Rogers, which is limited to large cities during off-peak hours. Of course, I'm limited to the HTC Touch with WM 6.1 but is also includes unlimited GPS.

And, btw, dual citizenship is now legal between the US and Canada so you don't have to renounce anything. Add to this that the surgery that has kept me alive in recent years would have caused all non-millionaires WITH insurance in your country to go bankrupt, and I'm pretty happy up here;)

When they say coast to coast, they are talking all the Big cities, I guess, what about the rural areas where EVDO was already available for a year or more. Did they upgrade this to the 3.6 MBPS version? 25 klicks out of town it switches over to Edge another 40 klicks or so it goes to GPRS.

Cut some slack... At least Rogers is preparing for the future...

The reason so many problems with Rogers network is bc of the iPhone.

Now if Rogers didn't do the 3.5G everyone would complain about that.

Its a never ending cycle

You moron. 3.5G doesn't indicate that its NOT a 3G technology. Infact the 0.5 added indicates exactly what HSDPA is: a higher speed add-on for 3G. HSDPA has always been referred to as 3.5G in the same way that EDGE has been referred to as 2.5G to GSM's 2G. Nobody debates that EDGE is a 2G GSM technology, its just a higher speed add-on. Don't try to act all smart in comments, you end up looking stupid.

2. I thought LTE was the big deal for everyone, not HSDPA/HSUPA - maybe the companies are realizing, "Crap, we dont have enough money for the next step, lets do what we were supposed to have, had a 3G tech be fast!"

Umm, YES! IM RIGHT! YOUR WRONG

High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a 3G (third generation) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity. Current HSDPA deployments support down-link speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 Mbit/s. Further speed increases are available with HSPA+, which provides speeds of up to 42 Mbit/s downlink.[1]
HSDPA is part of the UMTS standards since release 5, which also accompanies an improvement on the uplink providing a new bearer of 384 kbit/s. The previous maximum bearer was 128 kbit/s.

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is one of the third-generation (3G) cell phone technologies, which is also being developed into a 4G technology. Currently, the most common form of UMTS uses W-CDMA as the underlying air interface. It is standardized by the 3GPP, and is the European answer to the ITU IMT-2000 requirements for 3G cellular radio systems.
UMTS, using W-CDMA, supports up to 14.0 Mbit/s data transfer rates in theory (with HSDPA), although at the moment users in deployed networks can expect a transfer rate of up to 384 kbit/s for R99 handsets, and 7.2 Mbit/s for HSDPA handsets in the downlink connection.
Since 2006, UMTS networks in many countries have been or are in the process of being upgraded with High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), SOMETIMES known as 3.5G. Currently, HSDPA enables downlink transfer speeds of up to 7.2 Mbit/s.

*NOTE THAT SOMETIMES IN CAPITALS I PUT IS ONLY USED ONCE IN WIKIPEDIA UNDER UMTS TO DESCRIBE HSDPA - NO WHERE ELSE IN THE ARTICLE OR ON HSDPA ENTRY IS "SOMETIMES" USED TO REFER HSDPA AS 3.5G..LACK OF USE OF TERM 3.5G = NOT OFFICIALLY OR NON OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED USE AS 3.5G = ITS 3G STANDARD NOT 3.5G*

Umm, no. You're wrong.

UMTS = 3G
HSDPA = 3.5G
HSPA+ = 3.75G

Agreed--true "3.5G" would be HSPA+, which actually fuses "4G" technology with a 3G packet radio network.

Are the Diamond and the Vu the only devices supporting 7.2mbps? What about the iPhone--for some reason I thought it supported 7.2 as well (at least from a hardware perspective--does it need a firmware update to turn it on?)

3.5G? Uhhh... NO!

HSPA is a 3G technology standard that was capable of 1.8, 3.6, or 7.2 - so an "upgrade" isnt an "upgrade" to anything really, it only shows the network operator was CHEAP to launch something faster to begin with. T-Mobile USA once stated their launch 3G would be 7.2, and regardless if thats the case, we all know its not 3.5G just 3G

Not trying to flame, just trying to be VERY technical here.
