I hope everyone realizes that Verizon will do the same thing with their internet connection service as they did with DSL. When DSL was first available in NJ, the rates were great and the speeds were awesome (for its time). Verizon decided to join the market and gave their own DSL with super-low rates, to entice everyone to jump to their service. In fact, from what I heard, Verizon was at cost or just below cost, at the time, just to compete with the local DSL providers. Then once everyone hopped off the other DSL companies (which eventually went out of business b/c of Verizon), Verizon jumped their rates up to ridiculous costs.

I see them doing the exact same thing with Comcast and Cablevision and all other broadband carriers. Be weary of Verizon and expect their rates to shoot up, once they have you. They have a very good track record of this and will repeat it again.

I am on FIOS 50/20 now and I am itching for the 100 mbps service when available.

With what I have now.. a 750Mb file takes only 1.5 minutes to download…

I would die if I had to go back to Optimum Online.

For all of you people saying that it’s NOT NECESSARY – Please! You can never have enough speed. And those who really believe that tripe really don’t use their internet connection to it’s fullest capability! I can max my internet connection out easily when I’m downloading several Linux torrents, and trying to stream a video on my PC, PS3 (PlayOn + Hulu ROCK!), and my laptop is being used also by someone to view youtube, and other high bandwidth content – not to mention the online gaming – If you’re happy with your slow DSL/Cable – good for you! but don’t sit there and say it isn’t necessary!!! Speeds are horribly slow and NEED to get faster to keep up with the bandwidth needs that consumers need. HD streaming takes LOTS of bandwidth, and unless you either don’t mind skipping in your movies, or only being able to stream HD and NOT use the internet for anything else while that’s happening….congrats, but I simply need MORE BANDWIDTH and SPEED.

OH, and you cable boosters – You DO realize that your bandwidth is SHARED – FiOS is dedicated bandwidth to each subscriber. I’ve had cable and it’s great when you don’t have a bunch of neighbors that run torrents all day…

This is a land grab strategy. Cable is doing the same with wideband. Only a tiny fraction of subscribers will get this service, but it’s more about perception than anything.

@Kevin B – I’ve got the 20/5 plan from Verizon as well and I have always gotten my full download speed in any speed test that I have run. If I was getting a download maxing out at 5 I would definitely give somebody a call because something’s not right.

There will have to come a time soon when the people that want this kind of service will have to pay for it. These companies, and Verizon admits it with their “the 100Mbps speed threshold as a “sexy” marketing strategy…” comment, advertise these capabilities but fold the cost to provide them to the limited audience that wants them, into the overall infrastructure costs for all services. This makes all of us subsidize the few.

I am stuck with EVDO, currently with Sprint. Its actually good enough for Xbox Live most of the time. I would be happy with 3 mbps or even 1.5 on DSL. I live in rural Hawaii so there are some sacrifices to make.

@TRV$ –how can you continue living there? You must have a daaaamn good job for it to be worth dealing with 400Kbps. Damn my phone more than doubles that. I do feel your pain though, I got 2-way sat before DSL/cable were available in my area. While I loved that it was faster than dialup, a year later cable internet came to town, uncapped, over 10Mbps and for 1/3 the price of satellite. Of course not available at my house for whatever reason. After using cable at other peoples’ houses, it sucked to come home to 400Kbps.

I have Verizon FiOS… because I can’t stand ComCrap and their slow speeds and caps.
The Fiber is nice… I’m on a 20 mbps plan, and most of the time, I get close to that. According to my SpeedTest results, my average is about 15 mbps. Sometimes though, speed will slooow to a crawl – less than 5 mbps. I know those speeds are faster than most people have. I don’t game with it, just download, but I can’t imagine needing to have 100 mbps service. I’m paying $50/month for my superfast internet, which suits me just fine. If you are able to get FiOS, I say go for it. I’m lucky!

I think 100mbs is great, I just can’t afford it.

I’ve had FIOS for almost two years now and I’m up to 20Mb/s down and 5 up. I love it. It’s the bomb. It’s never been down (never). Not like the monthy cable modem resets with Comcast. There is no bandwidth cap like Comcast and The customer service is good to great depending on who you get.

The browsing experience is exactly the same as it was with Comcast with no discernible difference, but I can download files at a speedy 2.3 MBytes per second.

Okay now the bad part. It’s expensive. It was cheaper to start with but they’ve increased it twice and it’s now about 5 bucks more a month than Comcast.
All in all, it’s good deal for someone like me, who uses a lot of bandwidth, but Mike is right, if you’re just surfing it’s unnecessary. One could switch to FIOS and get a lower package if they just hated Comcast though.

LOL, 8MB is bad, but Comcast caps, which is their big mistake, say goodbys Crapcast!!!

I left Comcast a year and a half ago because their customer service was horrible, and their HD was very compressed compared to Directv which has the most HD right now, a friend of mine still has Comcast and the compression of HD channels is far worse now, my brother got Fios in Warminster a few months ago and their HD channels look perfect, and Fios has 3 times more channels in HD, I never used On-Demand, I watch TV live, and Comcast is horrible in comparison, I think City Counsel had better give us the chance to get Fios, and stop taking money OBVIOUSLY under the table from Comcast to stall this. As for Comcast’s Internet service, Comcast is worse than Verizon’s DSL, Comcast caps people, Fios and Verison Internet don’t cap anyone, that alone would keep smart people from ever choosing Comcast over Fios. So if you want to watch Netflix’s (Coming Soon) HD service, forget above Comcast, you’d be capped real fast. Comcast only caps because their Network can’t handle the Bandwidth, they made a mistake by not running Fiber, their loss, I can’t wait to get Fios, and I hope Comcast does make improvements, but I doubt they have a chance to keep the smart people.

I’d love 100 mbps from Verizon. For HD downloads + streaming, the faster, the better.

The problem is that all Verizon gives me now in Manhattan is 1.5mbps, And there is ABSOLUTELY NO news of any kind on the progress of FIOS at any speed. Maybe my building will get it in 2009, maybe in 2015, maybe never the way things are going. Unless you either live in the ‘burbs or or have amazingly good luck — no FIOS for you.

Guys this sounds great but like always there are always downfalls. I stand by my statement that I’m fine with 8m. Sure customers that have a higher need for their internet service may seek a higher speed. That’s available now guys 12-22mbps on Comcast. Their customer service may be terrible and pricing seems to continue to rise but their service works. I would like verizon to compete to make it a competive market but again 100mbps I just don’t think is necceesary guys.

It actually has more to do with *where* they can install FiOS. They are going to each township and fighting for the rights to install their service with Comcrap and the competing telco’s fighting them the entire way. The good thing is, everyone is so fed up with the crap that comcast has pulled off for the past 15 years that they are telling them to take a hike and allowing FiOS in.

but, the hearings alone take 30 – 90 days minimum. Then you have the actual fiber laying which could take upwards of 4 to 6 months.

i have comcast and i use my xbox 360, bit torrents, UMA, 2 labtops, 1 computer, a linksys wireless N router and so far everything is ok with 6mbps. but with 100mbps, that would cover everything i do, and kelly is right, COD4 is the shit and im unstopable in it! if anyone wanna throw down in it, my gamertag is Blackula504 or LanceCTurner@msn.com

Exactly. At what price speed? Comcast can say they give you 50Mbps intheir 3.0 trials but how long before they throttle you down in the real world like they do now? Sure I get 14Mbps now, but only for 30 seconds. No tv show or movie I want is only 30 seconds.

The question becomes how widely can FIOS deploy at 100Mbps and sustain that speed without rate or byte caps? Hell, my FIOS right now is 0Mbps (not here yet), I would just be pleased to get ANY service besides Comcast here, and would argue Verizon would be better served in the long run to increase their footprint versus upping their speeds. Spend money on expansion, your customer base wants your service to be available and worry about speed improvements later!
