OS update for BlackBerry Storm 9500 now available
With many of the Verizon users who took advantage of the leaked OS upgrade for their version of the Storm reporting vast improvements, it’s only understandable that a lot of Vodafone Storm users are upset about the lack of a new OS available through legitimate means or otherwise. Thankfully Vodafone Germany has stepped up to the plate and has officially released a software update for the 9500. Reported to improve accelerometer lag and touchscreen accuracy among other things, OS 4.7.0.78 is sure to make many disgruntled European Storm users happy. Grab a copy of OS 4.7.0.78 here and let us and the world know how you and your Storm are fairing.

This is where the storm falls short. How can you expect average joe’s to know that an update is available and to upgrade. Just another pathetic attempt to stave off competition. RIM, stick to what you’re good at, email devices.
Gee – now if only Verizon had any Storms available in their stores to actually purchase.
I get an e-mail from RIM when and update comes out with a link and instructions to install it. Pretty straight forward.
@Mike
Stick it ya frigin puke!! For starters many of the people who have the Storm in the US and across the pond have followed it for awhile and have the intelligence to understand the word Upgrade. To say that they do not is to insult them. Two the have delayed releasing a second batch of Storms to allow for an upgraded OS so that those people who do not frequent BG’s(a hack who has been scooped twice now in the last week and a half) and Crackberry( a far superior BB site) to get a better version of the Storm. So again stick it. I bought my Pearl back in March and the employees at the VZW store gave me a handout with Upgrade instructions and ya know what I was able to upgrade it. Lastly I was told by VZW customer support that an e-mail would go out when they finally get around to issuing a new OS upgrade. OTA upgrades rock and I can’t wait to see how they work. So piss off.
@VZW
GET OFF YOUR F*CKIN ASS AND RELEASE A F*CKIN UPGRADE!!!
@ Mike –
While I don’t have the hostility that Mark Twain does, I don’t think that this is an attempt for average joe’s to have an update. 1st, this is for the Vodaphone, not Verizon version. 2nd, the previous update for the storm was NOT an official update, so you wouldn’t expect an OTA easy download.
If/When verizon does issue an updated and it is handled like this, then we can call it “a pathetic attempt to stave off competition.”
@Mark Twat: Take a chill pill. Not all users are POWER users and for many, the Storm is their first Blackberry device. The marketing has been targeted directly at the consumer market, not the business, so give people a break for not understanding the upgrading of RIM devices. It’s not like RIM pumps out updates very often and they are only hustling these out because of the shit job they did on the original.
Does this work on the Verizon storm or is it just European?
Hopefully they handled it like Apple/AT&T does with the iPhone. A week or two after the update has been release, they send a free text messaging letting them know to update their phone.

I have a Verizon Storm and I barely had any trouble when I had v .65. I upgraded to .75 and now my phone is beginning to act a bit more buggy. Sometimes the button press doesn’t register even when you hear the audible click, the virtual keyboard just drops out when I’m typing sometime, and I even had that thing happen when I’m on a call and it automatically switches to speaker phone without pressing the screen. I hope these things are being worked on especially since I didn’t have those problems before the update.
@ Steve
I was wondering the same thing. My guess is it is just for Vodaphone.
@Evil Homer(is that Homer after he eats the soul donut?)
The name is Twain genius(know you spelled it wrong on purpose or at least hope you spelled it wrong).
First off this is supposed to be a consumer friendly device, but it is first and foremost a Blackberry. RIM and VZW showed their true colors when they set up those first touch events with their business customers. Second while I would not call it shit, the original OS is laggy and very buggy. Not gonna defend them on that. OS .75 has helped me cope and resist the urge to return it and wait till say April when I know the OS will be tip top and the Iphone competition I know it can be. (Given up on the whole Iphone Killer concept, the damn thing is still to pretty. Its like taking a classic GTO and facing it off against a corvette. The Storm being the classic GTO and the Iphone being the Corvette.)
Next I would like to say that because this thing is not called the Iphone that many (not all) of the people like myself who lined up on the 21st had done some research on the Storm. The Blackberry has always been for the most part a tool for business. Tell me I’m wrong. That being said I will tell you what I told Mike, stop calling them Stupid. Even knew users to Blackberry. They are not stupid. I had an old ass VZW flip before I bought my Pearl, and not a week after I had bought it I was able to thru the desktop manager install the new Upgrade. I was not a power user but I still managed to not brick my berry.
Lastly Mike was making a blanket statement against new BB users, and bashing RIM. I would consider myself to be a pretty loyal BB fan so no I don’t need to chill. Also I don’t appreciate being called female genitalia so you too can piss off.
Does the update make the Storm not suck anymore?
Good new for Vodafone, I’m sure VZW will get an official update out soon. Either way, I’ll just be happy when my Storm finally ships. Been waiting a freaking week!
Screw the software. I need a hardware upgrade! I have more dust under my screen than a 2005 Moto V3. I took it back to the store and they said they can order me another one, but by the time it comes in (dec 23rd) itl be passed my 30 day trial. Eff that noise, I’m taking this heap back. Someone wake me when they release a new hardware version of this beast.
Been searching around the web the last few minutes and seems several people have the Voda release up and running on the 9530. Don’t have time to research it much more at the moment but apparently it’s possible and people have the new OS up and running. Can’t wait till I get home this evening to update..
I’d say this update is only for Vodafone as in the US we’re getting the .75 upgrade. This upgrade, if it was coming to the US, would make BG’s obselete since he has .76. BG any confirmation on this? That you had your update for less than a week and an official update bested you? I doubt it but i’d be pretty funny considering all the bragging you did when you made that post lol.
PS a txt alert would really go a long way because I do know people with it who would not know how to even upgrade it unless they came to me.
@ Likeabite
9500 OS will not load on a 9530.
@AJC
Where the hell do you work a cement plant?? Must be or you are a liar. Hardware upgrade??? What do you expect a non clicking screen?
I’m trying it right now on my 9530. I’ll let you know
Instead of all the yapping, can we get back to the point? Has anyone upgraded and if so, how is it comparatively?
@AJC
VZW extended their trial period to 60 days on the Storm (perhaps other units as well). I believe the article was posted here or on CB. So perhaps you wont be SOL after all.
I couldn’t get it to work. Others may have more time to try.
Anyone know if the update will add a dedicated SEND button on the virtual keyboard? That’d be nice…
Talked to VZW store rep a couple nights ago and apparently the No-Hassle policy incorporates a $35 restocking fee. Just FYI for inquiring minds.
This fee does come with a caveat though…if you return the devie “within a day or two” per the store rep, they’ll waive fee. YMMV however.
so can anyone confirm this is the german equivalent of the verizon .75 update? and if so when you gonna hook us up with the urban legend .76 huh BG?
the disappearing keyboard is getting on my nerves something awful…
